Statement regarding alternative routes for 2015 Cape Town Cycle Tour

By Press Office · 355 comments

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust is aware of the current situation regarding the fires raging in the mountains of the Southern Peninsula through which the Cape Town Cycle Tour traditionally passes. We are in close contact with the City of Cape Town Disaster Management team as well as their Events Office and all the other role players.

As part of our standard operating procedure we have alternative route plans available for consideration by the authorities.

Once the situation pertaining to the existing route is made clear to us we will be in a better position to make a final decision about our plans for Sunday, 8 March.

We anticipate making a final decision in consultation with all the stakeholders by this coming Wednesday, 4 March.

Our thoughts go out to the people affected by this devastating fire and the brave dedicated firemen trying to bring it under control.

We appeal to the hundreds of cyclists out training for the Cape Town Cycle Tour to please avoid the affected areas and allow the officials the space to perform their duties.

Route could be. Start in town, up hospital bend, up Eddingbrough drive, down the cost to red hill, up red hill, ocean view, ou Kaapseweg, Constania Nek, Suikerbosie and then finish in town again.

That would be awesome!

The first Detour year they actually proposed that - but going via Smits rather than Red Hill.  The route was going to be about 118 km if I remember correctly.  The reason they eventually skipped Constantia Nek and Suikerbossie was because the people in Hout Bay were worried that they were going to be stuck there the whole day.

they won't do the Nek because it's said to be too dangerous for that amount of cyclists as its very narrow and with so many novice riders it's asking for trouble... I wish they would do that but they wont...

I think including Constantia Nek means cutting out Smitswinkel, Misty Cliffs, Soetwater etc and that's a major part of the proper Argus route but then again we'd get to do Suikerbossie and Camps Bay which is arguably even more of an attraction. I'd prefer this route than going up the boring M3.

The moment there is talk of potentially returning via the M3, the forecast for wind seems to be dying down  LOL

Ya, for a few km's.  But then there's a lot of uphill before the finish where the wind will make no difference.

I wonder how much more climbing is involved in the following - Boyes Drive, Red Hill, Ou Kaapse Weg, Constantia Nek, Suikerbossie?

probably still half the climbing than in the 94.7 :whistling:

If Chappies is closed and they use an alternative route, then this will be the one.

If Ou Kaapse Weg and Chappies are closed we are screwed.

Just think how quickly 30000 volunteers can put the fire out

Finally, a use for that USN drink they were giving out at Modderfontein the other day?

There's two alternatives really; both very likely

A revised route

A cancellation of the 2015 inaugural Cape Town Cycle Tour

That second alternative is something I couldn't get myself to say. Ultimately the deciding factor will be SAFETY. Let's hope there will be a route that the powers that be can pronounce safe.

We finish work tomorrow afternoon for a week regardless. It's a toss up between going to CPT to ride the Argus or going to Durbs to lay on the beach.

We certainly won't be staying in Jozi!

Let's see what announcements tomorrow brings.

Good luck to all those fighting the fires down there.

Very very unlikely that they will cancel the CTCT, the city will loose millions in revenue.
