Statement regarding alternative routes for 2015 Cape Town Cycle Tour

By Press Office · 355 comments

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust is aware of the current situation regarding the fires raging in the mountains of the Southern Peninsula through which the Cape Town Cycle Tour traditionally passes. We are in close contact with the City of Cape Town Disaster Management team as well as their Events Office and all the other role players.

As part of our standard operating procedure we have alternative route plans available for consideration by the authorities.

Once the situation pertaining to the existing route is made clear to us we will be in a better position to make a final decision about our plans for Sunday, 8 March.

We anticipate making a final decision in consultation with all the stakeholders by this coming Wednesday, 4 March.

Our thoughts go out to the people affected by this devastating fire and the brave dedicated firemen trying to bring it under control.

We appeal to the hundreds of cyclists out training for the Cape Town Cycle Tour to please avoid the affected areas and allow the officials the space to perform their duties.

Previously when Chappies was closed the return leg was up the Blue Route again and not via Constantia Neck - so it will probably be a much faster but much more boring route

If you did one of those then you would know the haul up Blue Route is anything but fun...

Swore i would never do another "De Tour"

Just think how quickly 30000 volunteers can put the fire out

The terrain where it is burning is so steep and difficult to reach on foot, that you are likely to get a hundred dead volunteers just by putting them up there, even without a fire raging. 40 degrees C in the shade today, and there is no shade up there. Smoke inhalation. Heart attacks. Fitness levels. Dehydration. You want people that know their stuff up there, that had the training and understand the risk and how to deal with it. Just look at the cliffs in the picture above, it is not as easy as just putting it out. The other side of the mountain is even worse. But, yes, I'm sure they can do with quite a few extra hands, especially when they have been at it for a few days in a row without much of a break.

my best ride was one of the detours, how I always wished I had those legs when it was over chappies and finished at maiden's cove......

a)would make the route too long.(you keen for 130km?)

b)used to be a popular route, don't think any funride goes down hout bay side of constantia nek anymore, just too many bad crashes (including fatalaties)

a) That's why I suggested we climb red hill and not smits, you should come out at around the same distance ish, longer the better :) Doing two laps anyway.

b) This was an issue when there were no road closures and a 17 year old collided head on with a tour bus back in the day during the Cape Cobra I think, my mom was in his group. But if full road closures it should be fine

those fatalities were in events with no road closure and riders crashed into oncoming vehicles. With road closure it is safe and there is opportunity for emergency vehicles to gain access

I wonder how much more climbing is involved in the following - Boyes Drive, Red Hill, Ou Kaapse Weg, Constantia Nek, Suikerbossie?

50 percent of the field would not be able to complete that route. My girlfriend included, and she trains often.

If we want to do a KILLER RIDE, that is roughly what we do. Agreed, most of the field will need a shuttle or two to complete that route.

For us Argus newbies: should the alternative route be via ou kaapse does that mean we climb up ou kaapse and then return back the M3 via Constantia Nek to Suikerbossie and then 'home'?

No, if we're going over Ou Kaapse Weg then it's straight down the M3 to the finish.

I'd much MUCH rather go over Chappies and Suikerbossie than go up the M3.  (Ou Kaapse is fine though - although not very scenic in its current state...)

That would be quite a long detour to bypass Chappies.

I recall that 3 cyclists died that year. One of them lay on the island between the M3 lanes just before UCT where SAPS had erected saw horses across the road to stop participants. The organisers had run out of water on Ou Kaapseweg as the earlier riders had used the water to cool themselves down.

I assume its the same as a few years back... Instead of Chappies we come back over Ou Kaaps and then take the M3 all the way back to Town
