Staalwater MTB Challenge offers a full weekend of riding options to mountain bikers

Outdoor enthusiasts are spoilt for choice next weekend when the annual Staalwater MTB Challenge and trail runs take place from Caledon Casino. On Saturday 10 Sept the 40km and 60km mountain bike routes will head North West towards Greyton on private farms never ridden before. Both routes also have special permission to ride through the botanical gardens. On the 60km the highest point is called “Jean se Bult” and the riding in lush green wheat fields bring some singletrack sections as well.

Riders can ride one day or both days of the various routes with prizegiving daily. For those keen to make a stage race of it, results for riders who complete both days of either the 40km or 60km options are eligible for overall prizes.

The Spring Trail Run also starts from The Caledon Casino, Hotel, Spa & Entertainment from 09h30 on Saturday for the 15km with a 7km that follows. Pre-enter for the discount, but late entries will be available on the morning as well. Prize giving for the Trail Runners will take place from 11h30 just before the MTB winners are announced. Lucky draw on both days for all, but on Sunday the Giant Simple Seven will be given away to a lucky participant.

Sunday, 11 Sept is day 2 for the mountain bikers, that also offers a 15km funride for the younger & beginner riders, so that they can experience the stunning Overberg scenery. On Sunday the 40km and 60km routes will ride among the yellow canola blossoms and do some river crossings. The 60km heads towards the wind turbines that gives a special feel, as well as 8km of singletrack with breathtaking views.

Top rider Erik Kleinhans from Team Topeak Ergon, have also confirmed has participation in the long route two-day stage race competition. Riders staying at The Caledon Hotel can indicate whether they want to join a Q&A session with him on Saturday evening.

The route marshals and refreshment stations will be managed as a fundraiser by the local Round Table charity group. Expect fresh fruit from the area, jellybabies, Powerade and Coke as well as drinks at the finish.

Coffee will be on offer from early morning and food stalls with burgers, pancakes and other mouthwatering dishes. Or enjoy a cold beer and even a massage from Livwell therapy.

All participants get free (!) access to the mineral waters after their ride or run – the origin for the name of the event. Kiddies entertainment available as well as a bike wash.

WIN an accommodation voucher from The Caledon Hotel on both days in the lucky draw plus other product prizes from Giant Bicycles, Falke Socks, Cape Storm and Spa products. The event is presented by media partner Bike Hub.

Pre-entries close on Wednesday 7 September and with less than R400 per rider per day, it remains the most affordable stage race!

Registration starts the Friday, 9th at the new Dirtopia Trail Centre on Delvera farm and continues in Caledon late afternoon and on race mornings. See the full schedule on the Dirtopia website.

Riders can change distances at registration at a fee, but to qualify for the Stage-race result, only both days of 60km or 40km will count.
