South Industries announce XCR Rims and Wheels

Paid partnership with South Industries

By Press Office · 37 comments

South Industries are proud to introduce our latest product, an ultralight Cross-Country rim and wheelset called the XCR (Cross Country Race). At just 310g per rim, with a 28mm inner rim diameter and a lifetime warranty, this new rim is 20% lighter than our previous generation cross country rim, the XC29.

Having just won the Men’s African Leaders Jersey at the world’s toughest Mountain Bike Stage Race, the Cape Epic, we believe this product will be a must-have for serious racers and weight weenies alike, without sacrificing strength, or stiffness. 100% designed, handmade and tested in house in Cape Town, South Africa.

The original XC29 rim was a revolution when it was first released in 2017, with a 28mm IRD and has gone on to win countless races, Cape Epic stages and appear at the Olympics, XCO Worlds, XCM Worlds and Commonwealth Games. We are keeping everything you like about that product and have made it significantly lighter without sacrificing strength or durability. In the world where every marginal gain counts, this represents a leap forward for athletes who demand the most from their equipment.

Using a new carbon fibre material type, we were able to shed weight from the already lightweight rims to get them to an everyday riding weight of 310g per rim, whilst holding onto their legendary stiffness and compliance. Even with the 20% drop in weight, this is no race day only wheelset, instead it retains the ‘set and forget’ reputation we have built at South Industries. We built the XCR to be your daily shredder as well as perform at the highest level on race days.

Available as a rim, or complete wheelset, as follows:

  • XCR Rim: 310g / R 10 985 per rim
  • XCR Rims on Tune Prince / Princess hubs and Berd Spokes: 1090g / R59 785 per wheelset.
  • XCR Rims on Tune Prince / Princess and Sapim CX-Ray spokes: 1190g / R 41 225 per wheelset.
  • XCR Rims on Tune KillHill/ClimbHill and Sapim CX-Ray spokes: 1290g / R 37 615 per wheelset.
  • All rims come with our standard lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects and generous first-owner crash replacement policy, which you can read here
  • 28-hole configuration. Disc brake only.
  • Tubeless tyre compatible only

Yes, it's a lot of cash, but comparing apples with apples, their pricing is in line with the rest.

A set of Bontrager Kovee RSL wheels sells for R47k.

Add a set of DT Swiss 240 EXP hubs to the South rims, and lace them with quality bladed spokes, and pay the wheel builder, and you're looking at a sticker price for a wheelset of around R39k.

R8 000 cheaper than the equivalent Bontragers.....

The point is that the stuff be it South Industries or anyone else is ridiculously overpriced for what it is. A set of bike wheels. No, we don't have to buy it and I never would as a matter of principle, but it sets a mark and leads to overpricing lower down the line too. You can double the price of a decent set of alu wheels and they'd still look like value compared to these and I suspect that is what happens sometimes.

You're not wrong!

But yes, some people prioritize (and can afford) these kinds of wheels.
Have you ever ridden a 1300g wheelset on your MTB, with Spez Fasttrack or Maxxis Aspen tyres?

It feels like you have added 50w to your power.

I build about 1 or 2 sub-1500g carbon wheelsets (R25-35k) a month for customers who are NOT racing for podiums.

Never forget that for many people cycling is a hobby and a passion, and they do it for enjoyment.
In the same way a hobbyist photographer spends R70k on a new lens for his R30k camera.... or a golfer spends R40k on the nicest clubs.

Anything new feels amazing for the first few rides until you get used to it and then the effect fades and you start looking for the next big power gain eg an electric motor. 🙂

I definitely can't argue that prices have become silly.
I've seen prices on wheel parts go up 30%-40%+ over the past 7 years.

I used to be able to build a premium alloy set for R10k. That's now R14k....

Same with bikes, right? What's the price of a top-of-the-range racing MTB? R200k+?

If your MTB costs R90k (not unrealistic these days) and you spend R30k on wheels, that's only a third of the value of the bike.

Did your entry-mid-range alloy hardtail cost R40k? Is it reasonable to spend R10-15k on wheels?

It's a fascinating discussion because everyone has a different perspective on the value for money you get on cycling equipment.

Have you seen that PRIME energy drink? R400 for a can.
Is it good value? Hell no, but they're selling like hot-cakes.

Yebo, I just pulled the R50k trigger to be a better photographer.  Still need the 800mm f11 and 1.4 t/c 🙂

Is there truth to the story I heard that South is making rims for Tune ? (i,e. the Tune carbon wheels are actually made by South Industries?)

It's called the Placebo Effect.

Same thing Happens when I buy a New Bike.

Driving sales requires the next best thing to be available with in 2years of the last. It retains jobs and drives value for shareholders. Pricing is a subset of what people are willing to pay to show their commitment, it’s sort of like a Scotsman showing you what’s under their kilt

£2500 gravel wheels from Roval.

I ride the previous version of these - the SLS3 with 240 hubs. They are amazing and really well built. Tough as nails. 40k is a lot higher considering landed these would roll in at under R30k for a “pro level” wheelset.

I looked at South industries when I bought these 18 months ago and couldn’t justify the difference.

It's a fascinating discussion because everyone has a different perspective on the value for money you get on cycling equipment.

Is it good value? Hell no, but they're selling like hot-cakes.

Your 30% - 40% example is a 6.5% increase per annum, which is a little below CPI.  I do however think that your base line R10k was not as far back as 7 years.  Probably between March 2020 (Pre COVID) and now.

Prices have gone crazy, I built a bike, not top of the range spec, but decent spec for my needs, at around R35k, when it was stolen and I had to re-price the build for insurance, it was just over R50k, that was in less than a year.

My new (to me) bike has carbon rims, I think they hold me back, as I'm scared to ding them, especially when I'm lazy to check tire pressure and go out with under inflated tires like I did yesterday...

As for Prime - that's a different debate.  I think clever marketing, where they've created this hype with school kids selling a sip of the stuff at R100 per sip.  1 May it launches at Checkers for R39 per liter, lots of people will buy it to see what the hype is about, boosting sales and quickly recovering their initial investment to get stock out to all of the outlets...  Apparently it tastes like watered down Energade!

I know your comment was sarcastic, and not that it makes much different for us but in reference to this article a lot of high profile XC and Enduro riders use them including PFP, Tom Pidcock, Matthias Fluckinger, Titouan Carod etc.
