Some much anticipated end of year downtime looms large for most and many of KwaZulu-Natal’s mountain biking and trail running fraternity are looking to Sunday 7 December’s STIHL Sharks Trail Adventure as the perfect way to kick start the festive season.
Participants of the 2014 STIHL Sharks Trail Adventure can once again look forward to spectacular views of Shongweni Dam and surrounds.
Staged at the picturesque Summerveld Estate in Shongweni, the day’s programme is packed to the brim with a variety of activities both on and off the trails as everyone looks to get into the holiday spirit and unwind at the back end of another busy year.
On the trails, mountain bikers have the choice of either the 40km Half Marathon, 19km Intermediate, 10km Family Ride or – for the younger members of the family – the hugely popular 2km Sharkie Kids Ride while the region’s trail running enthusiasts have a feast of scenic twists and turns to enjoy throughout either the 18km or 9km trail run events.
Waterfall crossings are just one element of the superb mountain biking and trail running routes of the 2014 STIHL Sharks Trail Adventure.
“The 40km course is a challenging but stunning route that has some brilliant single track sections and offers a wonderful half marathon experience!” says route director Andrew van Rensburg.
“The 19km route is relatively easy but includes some very basic single track sections that are not all that technical yet very enjoyable while the 10km Family Ride is an easy peddle around the beautiful Summerveld complex which all family members will enjoy.
“Finally there is a course that will provide both 18km and 9km trail run participants with thrills close to your home. We’ve put in some big effort for the running section of this year’s event so make sure you join us!” he adds.
The 2014 STIHL Sharks Trail Adventure at Summerveld Estate in Shongweni on Sunday 7 December is one for young and old.
Once all the berms and bridges have been conquered, hills and valleys enjoyed and Discovery Vitality points earned – between 500 and 2250 points are on offer across the various MTB and trail running events on the day – participants, spectators and local community members alike will have plenty of post-race entertainment to choose from.
Some great local musicians will grace everyone’s ears while the handcrafted Christmas creations and delicious artisan food of the exclusive Sunday staging of the renowned Shongweni Farmers’ Market has something to offer all members of the family and the Summerveld Estate provides the ideal venue for a family day out in the countryside.
After crossing the finish line having enjoyed a morning’s adventure to remember, participants are encouraged to stretch out on a blanket in the magnificent shade of the outstretched branches and leaves of Summerveld’s plethora of trees while taking in the spectacular views of the valleys below.
The STIHL Sharks Trail Adventure’s 2km Sharkie Kids Ride already has youngsters throughout KZN buzzing with excitement.
Bring along a picnic basket or even a braai and spend the day in the countryside with friends and family while getting into the swing of summer.
