For the past five years, STBB has hosted the STBB 2Keep-a-Breast MTB Challenge, which has become one of the most popular mountain-biking events in the Western Cape.
The event attracts a growing field of around 2 000 amateur and professional cyclists who love the opportunity to ride the unique network of world class trails built into the Bottelary Hills Renosterveld conservancy.
The spectacular post-event market is hosted on the gorgeous Overgaauw Wine Estate and offers a huge food market with a wide range of delicious food, craft beer, wine tasting, and a supervised children’s entertainment area with a jumping castle, face painting, sand art and a colouring-in competition.
Because of the phenomenal growth of the MTB event, which will take place on 22 October this year, STBB have decided to add, for the first time this year, a Twilight Trail Run on the same shorter routes and venue on the evening before the MTB event – 21 October 2016.
The STBB 2Keep-a-Breast MTB Challenge was conceived specifically to support an organisation whose work is leading the fight against cancer in South Africa: The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). CANSA works tirelessly to enable cancer research, educate the public, and provide support to all people affected by cancer.
Current statistics show that one in eight South African women will get breast cancer. All of us are affected by breast cancer, whether personally or via a spouse, friend or family member. The fantastic thing is that this disease is very treatable and success rates for recovery are excellent with early detection. STBB’s message is that early detection is coupled with awareness. You need to be aware of breast cancer to be motivated to go for regular mammograms and to encourage those you love to do the same. Hence the goal of the STBB 2Keep-a-Breast MTB Challenge : breast cancer awareness, which leads to early detection, which leads to beating breast cancer! Self-examination is good and necessary, but a mammogram can detect cancer years before you can, and early detection is key.
For the past five years STBB have raised an average of R80 000 a year in donations for CANSA, but the firm want to grow their commitment to the charity in line with the growth of the event itself. In 2016, their vision is to donate R250 000 to CANSA – a target they are well on their way to reaching with the support of their generous sponsors and all entrants.
