With the Enduro Western Cape series being disrupted this year due to COVID, local trail rider, architectural professional, husband and father, Chris Barrett decided to take things into his own hands.

On Saturday, 26th September @ 8:00, forty four riders from all over the country congregated at Ground Zero Bike & Trail Park, the start & finish for the Witfontein Funduro 2020. All praise to God for holding back the rain, and sending the chilly winds to keep the riders cool.

This was a free event for all Hillbillies Members, and non-members were only required to pay a day pass for the use of the trails. Some big names, such as Johann Potgieter (5x National Downhill Champ), made the journey to take part in the enduro. Even local Cross Country racer Tristan Nortje took part on his XC race bike.

The trails around George (aka Witfontein) are perfectly suited. Just begging to host an enduro race. The Hillbillies Mountain Bike Club, local riders as well as the trail running clubs pour hundreds of hours of work into building and maintaining the beautiful trails. The damage caused after the strong winds several weeks ago was excessive, but everyone pulled together to re-open most of the trails.

Riders entering the Full Funduro raced five stages, covered a total distance of 32km with elevation gain of 1200m. The Lite Funduro consisted of three stages, 23km. The route was just difficult enough to not overwhelm the younger and less experienced riders, but still give the hardcore gravity junkies a good challenge. The trails chosen incorporated all of the goodness that Witfontein has to offer while testing a riders full range of skills and fitness. From old-school fast and flat-out sections over loamy goodness, to slippery rooty trails with tight turns, and then finally big double jumps mixed with steep rocky chutes, the Witfontein trails have something for every rider.

A Community Effort

Various members of the George mountain biking community came together to make the inaugural Witfontein Funduro happen.

Braam Pretorius, Hillbillies Chairman, generously availed himself as a timing marshal on the day, as did Marthinus & Shauna Esmeyer of Paradise Adventures and Kendon Sharp.

ccs-62657-0-89455700-1601464986.jpeg

The Hillbillies also sponsored a water table, which was over and above what could be expected at a free event. Skysha Barrett, Ella Barrett & Elsa Sharp braved the cold to make sure that riders didn’t bonk on the tough course.

Ride Life Bicycle Shop also helped out significantly with the course marking and making sure that the trails were not obstructed on the morning of the race.

Jacques Lourens of Frontier Medix was on site, but thankfully no one had to leave the mountain in an ambulance.

ccs-62657-0-29628300-1601465029.jpeg

A last thank you to everyone who has not been mentioned, but who contributed behind the scenes to make the whole event possible. It was a huge team effort with weeks of planning that could not have happened without the support family and friends.

What a super rad event. And the trails, wow the trails. Best in the WC except if Status Quo was there as well (and some sneaky off radar stuff). So glad we make a plan to go there at least once a year, but honestly it should be far more.

Also, at R200 a year for Hillbillies membership...I just bought a years membership. If you look at how much time and dedication has gone into that network over the years (even when I still lived there in 2011), all who entered should be considering a years membership as a donation :) It's half the cost of a single EWC event :)

Oh man, did I mention how good the trails were?! A-lines that gave you an actual advantage too! Sooooo good :)

Like I said, next year all the #influencers will be there hashtagging and high fiving the place.

I'm glad I got to go this year. Big crowds and the cool kids intimidate me enough to not pitch.

I also really like the photography tag.... While we were all trying not to DED, deds was taking pictures of us

Wahahaha, appropriate name :)

Do it again, but keep it a fun event IMO.

Anyway, will post here and around if we plan to head through again this year and next. Trails are good training for our Italy trip that is now happening next year, and there are a few good ones we missed out on that need doing. Jewie, I am sure we can wrangle a BMX for you, although that bike you were on wasn't much larger  :P

Thank you Nick. Sickest day I've had on the bike in a long time. So stoked that we were able to make the whole thing happen. Bringing an event to our locals is one thing, but seeing guys from our of town so stoked on our trails, just makes the effort all the more worthwhile.

This out of towner is frothing for an excuse to get back. Still running possible line choices and obstacles I missed through my head. Lots to improve on next time.

What's the 2021 date?  ;)

Who needs a date, let's just pick a weekend and go :) Preferably as long weekend though.

I don't know if any of you did, but the night riding there...Wow, next level awesome!

It's a pleasure but it was mostly Chris and Ded's doing. I just did some cut'n'pasting and moved some photos around.

Thinking about making it a precursor to the EWC series, a practice race. 21st of March or 25th of April. Will confirm once the EWC dates are announced.

I'm not sure I would want to ride some of that on a 20"..... 26" kids bike was a happy medium!

I'm with Nick. Line choices and some really bad 'race day bubble' mistakes cost me minutes. I would also like to come back and get a bit more comfortable on that top section of stage 4 and ACDC.

SO much to do!

Nick and I also got a very fun surf in at Vic Bay before heading home on Sunday. It was a proper action Barbie weekend

YOH!!

It's the text book attack position that won me that cover shot.

I can get into it and hold it so perfectly because I'm going so slowly.....

That makes sense why the other photos by this journalist were blurry, but yours was so clear it made the feature pic

deds took some bangers. There is one of Potty flying over a place I am sure I skidded down.

If anything this weekend has made me want to ride my Mountain Bike more, which I'm 100% certain is the point to things like this.

Frothing hard for another visit

All I keep thinking of was how excited yet intimidated I was hiking up to stage 2's start with riders (Pottie) tearing down that top bit of singletrack at warp speeds while the cries of "Rider" sent everyone diving like scenes from Hack Saw Ridge when fighter bombers flew overhead..

Considering the guy who dropped into stage 2 just before me pawned it on the white rocks 25m away from the start, did several rolly pollys and dedded, I dropped in really slowly and kept expecting the rolly polly monster to get me!

That stage was full gas and I was probably half gas. It intimidated me and filled me with the fear.

Yoh, the stoke is still high

@Jew Hahah You talking about the rolly poly in your pants?

A lot of them are built, a lot of work put in, but emphasis kept on keeping them with only what is needed to allow a rider to progress, get creative and learn to handle their  bike properly. Not just sit in another berm. Yes, I saw the latest PP email.

No, you listen. I think it is a minor miracle that Chris and his team even produced results at their first enduro. So be grateful that your name even appears on a results sheet somewhere!

Can someone in the know please put the correct top 10 in this thread so I can correct the article? Thanks  :whistling:

They had some help preparing from ppl who have stuffed up using the app before, who in turn learnt from ppl who both stuffed it up and got it right before...So they were damn smart, learn from other peoples mistakes :)

Hahahaha  You made my day. I had to check If I got warning points from the Authorities there for a moment.

Speaking of his team..Does anyone know If the kind underdressed gent with the staunch sidepath and the classic HT bike ever made it back to civilisation? That guy deserves a bells as he had the baptisim of Enduro/George peak fire last weekend..

Bos, I was also hoping that the results were wrong. Some ripper kid on a Blur finished in front of me.

Nick, we're pretty lucky that the timing worked out in the end. 3 of the 4 timers didn't pitch up on the day, so I had to call in some last minute favours while I was trying to register everyone. None of them had ever used the timing app before, so it's actually a mini miracle

Thermophage. You gave us a big fright by giving us a timing sheet that had missing formula's. Luckily you were there to fix your own mistakes   Then the timer at the end of stage 3 managed to assign everyone's time to the person who finished next. Was a mess, but stoked it all worked out in the end.

Kendon Sharp? With the Allan Gray lycra? He dropped in after the last rider and quickly realised that neither his fingers nor his brakes were working. His words: "By God's grace there was a dude who had ripped off his gears (derailleur), so I had to walk down with him".

On closer inspection of his wife's bike later that day, I found that the entire fork lowers, front brake caliper & hub were completely covered in fork oil   considering that he isn't I rider, I was actually super impressed when he made it all the way down Stage 5 on the e-bike we were using for route marking the day before.
