New ownership for Absa Cape Epic

By Press Office · 58 comments

IRONMAN announced today it has reached an agreement to acquire the highly regarded Cape Epic mountain bike race in South Africa. In addition to operating The Motatapu and The Pioneer multiple stage mountain bike races in New Zealand, the purchase of Cape Epic marks IRONMAN’s biggest step into the mountain biking market, as they aim to grow this race format substantially across the globe.

Founded in 2004, the Cape Epic is the only eight-day mountain bike (MTB) stage race classed as hors catégorie (beyond categorisation) by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). Having recently completed its 13th edition, the race is unique in that it attracts world champions, Olympic champions, and other top professional riders, as well as a large field of international amateur participants.

“The Cape Epic is an iconic, world-class event that many consider the most prestigious mountain bike race in the world. This acquisition shows the commitment of IRONMAN and Wanda Sports to growing mass participation events worldwide,” said Andrew Messick, Chief Executive Officer of IRONMAN who also oversees the active lifestyle segment for Wanda Sports. “We see great potential in the mountain biking market, and the Cape Epic will anchor a portfolio of exciting and extraordinary off road and dirt-based races.”

Cape Epic founder Kevin Vermaak will spearhead this expansion for IRONMAN, and will be responsible for developing a worldwide series of mountain bike races.

Known as the “untamed African mountain bike race,” this eight-day event includes a prologue and seven stages, and is held in the Western Cape of South Africa in March. The route changes every year, and the accumulated distance of approximately 700km usually includes about 15,000m of altitude gain. Over the years the Cape Epic has grown into the most televised mountain-bike stage race in the world – it is a highlight on the professional racing calendar and attracts amateur riders wanting to challenge themselves in the same environment as the professional riders.

“We are very excited about the future of the Cape Epic and have been looking for an opportunity to take a significant step forward,” said Vermaak. “The event has changed the face of mountain biking and the opportunity to tap into the expertise of a global event business like IRONMAN will take it to the next level. I am honored to be afforded the opportunity to lead IRONMAN’s mountain biking business and look forward to being part of the global strategy.”

Vermaak said that Lynn Naudé would remain to lead the existing Cape Epic management and staff who will continue to deliver the race at the highest level. He also confirmed that the Absa Cape Epic would continue to operate from Cape Town.

“The Cape Epic has come a long way since 2004 and is reaching a point where its expansion depends on the growth of the mountain bike endurance category across the world,” continued Vermaak. “With IRONMAN we’ve found a partner who is aligned with where we want to go in terms of building that category.”

The 2017 edition of Absa Cape Epic will take place from March 19-26 with the route being announced in October 2016. For more information on the Absa Cape Epic, visit www.cape-epic.com.

OK, so now the race will be priced in USD, at a level us local Saffas will not be able to afford.

Probably good news that a reputable group have taken over, but on the other hand i think it (CE) will loose its exclusivity.... which has already started happening before IM people got involved, but now it will be accelerated.

One thing for sure, i think (hope) the entry costs will come down

There was a time when Iron Man was a pretty exclusive event on a far distant Island on the other side of the World, now its pretty common and there are hundreds all over the world.

Like its exactly affordable now :w00t:

If the concept continues to expand to other countries (like IM) then the price should come down.... not many countries have gold nugget strewn streets....

Pretty much!

I hope it (the price) does come down as I'd love to do it but will the race still be the way it is now with the whole 'untamed African mtb race' marketing it has? Not so sure about that. Not all change is good. We'll have to wait and see I guess.

Outback EPIC

Death Valley EPIC

Siberia EPIC

etc

Then when its saturated

Drakensberg Half EPIC

Rocky Mountain Half EPIC

Whelsh Midlands Half EPIC

Maljorca Half EPIC

etc.

I hope, like Kona (Hawaii), Cape Epic can be retained as the official World Champion event to which all the Pros aspire to. That will be cool, and economically benenificial to the Country (tourism)

At an informal pre-announcement media briefing earlier today Kevin Vermaak indicated that this is very much the goal.

The Cape Epic is to become what Kona is to Ironman within an international mtb series of sorts.

What was made very clear is that Kevin will be a key influencer in the mountain biking component of the group, including the Cape Epic, even though no longer as involved in the day to day operations.

So I'd imagine much of the essence of what has made the Epic a success will be retained, plugging into the expertise and resources within the WTC "mothership" where it makes sense.

So many haters here. I think it is good for the sport.

I wonder how ABSA are going to take it. They must have pumped millions of dollars inott that race.

Be interesting to see what the new name will be!

Agreed, great for the sport. It just so happens that one of the companies owned by the Wanda group is Infront Sports -  a media rights & distribution company. More TV and other media coverage = better value for pro riders and their sponsors... hopefully that will soon translate into an even healthier pro contingent at the event.

Although nothing can be confirmed at this stage, from the discussion yesterday it doesn't sound like the Cape Epic name is going anywhere. There's huge value in the Cape Epic brand and I'm sure the new owners will want to capitalise on that rather than tossing it.

So this makes the Cape Epic Chinese owned.

The winnners gets a trophy, then have to come back next year cause it broke after 15 minutes. It's brilliant actually.

Most know it as the ABSA Cape Epic, I think thats what he was getting at. (Also the name of the thread mentions Absa)

ABSA are probably happy, as Barclays has done a little side step.

Nope, they added the Barclays tents.

It very much was the Absa Cape Epic this year.

(The poor marketing manager for Absa and the Cape Epic is crying, according to you the main sponsor did not sponsor the event this year :P Does not bode well for new owners :P )

Wanda is chinese, but they will want to leverage global appeal.

Great Wall Epic (vehicle partner GWM).

If it gets a Chinese focus on the country, and especially the winelands - then it can't be too bad for our wine export market.
