New kids on the block: The Westpeak Launch

By BikeHubCoreAdmin · 64 comments

Westpeak began with an idea mid way through 2015. As two students who couldn’t find any clothes that looked as good on the bike as they did off, we decided to make our own. You can find out more about us and our story here.

A few months down the line and this is where we are, finally unveiling our first products!

A lot of time, thought and research has gone into the design of our clothes and ensuring they’re your perfect outdoor companion. For now, both the lines will be functionally identical with the only difference being the colouring and branding.

Ride Short stand out features:

  • The material used is light and has some flex, with special attention given to durability.
  • The cut differs from any other baggies in the South African market. Emphasis was put on a sleek look and feel that eliminated any excess material flapping in the wind or catching your saddle. They’re also specifically designed to not catch the back of your knee when pedaling.
  • We understand not everyone’s bodies are the same, or you occasionally eat a bit much at Sunday lunch, so all the shorts come with waist adjusters to ensure you get the perfect fit, every time.
  • We’ve included two zipped pockets on either side, specifically positioned to avoid anything inside them bouncing while going through the pedal stroke.

ccs-62657-0-56314200-1464606882.jpg

And our Ride Tee:

  • There was emphasis was put on the look and feel of the ride tee. It is different to anything in the local market.
  • The material used is light and breathable, with superior moisture wicking qualities to keep you cool right through those long weekend adventures.
  • Special thought went into the rear pocket design. It has been designed to fit most big smart phones (with the exception of the Huawei P7 – it’s huge), with space for more. We’ve got a snap–shut system that is easy to open and close on the fly and stops the contents from jumping out when you’re bombing down the trails. We’ve included some padding against the skin to stop any of your ride essentials scratching you.

So, where to from here?

We’re headed to production. With luck, we should be fulfilling our first orders within 7 weeks. We’re offering a pre-production discount on all our products if you order them via our crowd-funding page. This will ensure you not only get a discount, but you’ll also be the first to get our kit. If we don’t reach our goal, you get every cent back, no exceptions. The money from this will go into advertising, R&D, as well as production of our trail running stuff.

Need more info? Post below and we’ll get back to you. Alternatively, you can get hold of us through our website, Facebook page, or email.

You also qualify for 10% off your first purchase by signing up now. Offer only valid until Friday 3 June.

We hope you’re as excited as we are.

Cheers for now,
The Westpeak Team

Then you can go straight from your ride to a golf game without even changing :-)

Or out for a Beer? ;) - Well thats the idea.

the baggies: zip or buttons?

the baggies: zip or buttons?

The fly area is a zip with two buttons securing the front of the zip (if you know what I mean). The pockets are zipped.

All this naysaying... I like the look (though I've never owned a polo shirt in my life. Kinda looked like a banker on a casual day), so I'm going to throw some coin down. Baggies for sure and might mix it up the the trail polo in the bundle as well.

I kickstarted the limits power meters (look how good that's been so far!) and you boys are doing better than them in my eyes.

Awesome stuff, thank you for the support, you won't be disappointed, we can't wait to get into production and sort you guys out with some top notch kit.

Hopefully we can convert you to the Ride Shirt as well.

Why do you need to trademark a logo? Surely if it's been designed from scratch by a designer there is no need to trademark it? You can't own the Kudu as an icon? I'm asking out of curiosity as I am a designer and never needed to go through this process...yet.

Pretty simple - so people don't use the logo or a similar logo, or sue you for using a logo similar to theirs.

Take a look at the SAN Parks logo - that is trademarked... quite exactly what categories it is trademarked in I don't know - but they will be grumpy if you use a similar logo in a category they have already trademarked it in (and you can buy SANparks clothes)

And that is also why a bunch of guys in South Africa can make and sell shirts under the Polo brand.

Ralph Lauren who owns the brand internationally did not protect his IP in South Africa during the 80's, so someone else registered a brand with the same name and almost identical logo here and now are the rightful owners.

Hence no proper Ralph Lauren shirts in SA as he is prevented for infringing their trademark.

Thanks a MILLION to all of you that have got onto the kickstarter page, we are well over 50% to being fully funded now with all your help.

Still a way to go but the support has been amazing.

not entirely correct AFAIK

There's one shark who has the polo label here protected, just the horsey faces the other way.

the kudu thing I like it, but I immediately thought sanparks

Glad you like it, hopefully we can change that immediate reaction to: WESTPEAK in future.

I really like the logo, think it looks awsome.

Do the baggies come with lining?

Thanks we dig it too.

By lining I presume you mean shammy tights?

At the moment the baggies will be stand alone mountain bike specific shorts. We are working on a shammy insert that can be bought separately!

Well done guys. Nice to see you guys taking the risk with an upstart. You could have moaned and blamed the economy (all while sat at Bohemia having your 7th beer), but you're getting out there taking the risk. Kit looks cool and I'm sure the range will grow. I'd agree to trademark your logo, but not that you have to change it.

If I've missed it then sorry, but tell us again Jiva vs Fundi - what are the differences? (wanting to place an order and want to make sure first)

I want to order shorts and shirt, but there is no option to select size.

Is this brand on or not, site allows orders but no size selection possible?

One size fits all

hopefully they ask you to give the sizes once they know the funding is in and ready too roll.

Thanks Iwan - thanks for all your help too!

Jiva: more fun outgoing colours with bright highlights.

Fundi: more neutral colours with understated branding and highlights.

Shot for the support!

You can place an order for shorts through our crowdfunding: http://www.jumpstarter.co.za/campaigns/westpeak and then closer to the time of production being completed we will phone/email you and ask about your size and style preference.

Hope this helps!

We're on and have reached our funding goal which is pretty sweet!

The images on the site are for reference only for now and all our orders are being fulfilled through our crowdfunding page - see link above.

Spot on - we'll get hold of all our backers personally so we can chat to them about sizes and style closer to the time.
