Ladies–only mountain bike stage race launches in South Africa

By Press Office · 45 comments

With more than 60 events annually, South Africa is undoubtedly the mountain bike stage race capital of the world. It was only a matter of time before a ladies-only stage race was established; and in 2016, Titanium Sports Events will present the inaugural Tour de Femme.

The Tour de Femme is a three-day mountain bike stage race, based in the Western Cape, in the beautiful Cape Winelands region. For ladies only. According to the organisers, who are women, too often the men are given the ‘pink ticket’ to go out for a weekend with the boys. This time, it’s the ladies’ turn…

“’Race’ is perhaps a strong word to describe the Tour de Femme. ‘Escape’ might be more appropriate,” smiled Jenni Green of Titanium Sports Events. “We’re focusing on the whole experience and not just the pedalling parts. It’s a ‘me-time’ escape for women that love mountain biking, but with certain ‘race’ elements.”

“While most stage races have a Women’s category and encourage Mixed category participation, there’s generally a very strong focus on the testosterone-fuelled racing part of these events. And with the majority of entrants being male, there’s a soft touch missing.” said Jackie Lange of Titanium Sports Events.

“While the mountain biking at the Tour de Femme will be challenging (but not too intimidating), all the off-the-bike elements will be focussed on what women want, including a bike wash and lube station, mechanical support (no girl wants to get her hands dirty), quality, tasty food (not just heaps of carbs), great wine (obviously) and plenty of comfortable social gathering points,” said Lange.

“Of course we’ll be taking the self-spoil theme even further and will have options for the ladies to enjoy a massage, manicure and/or pedicure in a low-pressure, peaceful environment,” added Lange.

The Tour de Femme will be based at one location, creating a village-type atmosphere. Not a tent in sight! No queues to use a loo and no brushing your teeth with a headlight… In order to maintain a high level of participant satisfaction, the entries will be limited and will include teams of two as well as solo entries.

The entry fee will include two nights accommodation and three days of catering. There will be two timed stages, with the first day being an orientation-type afternoon that includes some skills sharpening and followed by a mellow wine-tasting ride through the Winelands.

“We’ve secured partnerships from SCOTT Sports, Helly Hansen and ICE ID so far. We’re speaking to various interested potential title sponsors and will reveal more details on the inaugural Tour de Femme in due course.

“It will go ahead in 2016 and it will be purely focussed on what women want in a mountain biking getaway. For now, ladies should visit the Tour de Femme website at www.tourdefemme.co.za where they can request being added to our database for regular event updates and announcements,” added Green.

Call me daft but no, I don't get it - is there really a difference when the end result (you boycotting them and demanding the marketing team to be fired) is exactly the same?

Yes, perhaps it's mere semantics.  I am trying to distinguish between reacting on behalf of others when you have absolutely no skin in the game and cases where you are directly insulted.

But just be careful.  I said specifically that's what goes on in my head when I hear an insulting ad.  I make an individual choice as consumer.  I don't go running to social media screaming like my hair is on fire calling for people to lose their jobs or others to join me in my personal crusade.

Each person can decide for themself.  And I don't see much wrong with that.

"Tour de Femme" sounds like a vaginal cream.

All jokes aside, the wording does enforce a very cliched and stereotypical perception of women and female cyclists.

No mention is made of the type of riding to be expected, technicality and distance, and other details pertaining to the race. It seems like the off-the-bike experience is the focus of the organisers.

My wife and I like riding together and there are plenty of shorter "stage" races eg the 2 day Houwhoek and McGregor events and the 3 day W2W , GR 200 etc we could do together if we wanted to/had the time. So not really needed from that point of view IMO

But, hey there's a market, so why not.

In full support of this idea! Not a great start but a start nonetheless.

Three months after buying my first bike I did something similar.  At that stage of my skills and confidence development it was exactly what I needed and I think it is a great that something similar is being planned.

Now I am no longer a part of this event's target market.  But I am not offended by the wording at all, I just did not see myself as someone it was aimed at.

What does frustrate me is the lack of information on the website.  The website should have been live by the time of the press release.

Personally, I am not sure that I would enjoy the company of a bunch of girls for 3 days.  I like having guys around (and they provide eye candy)... Then also some of these ladies are tough ladies.  Not sure if it is aimed at the novice rider best you mind your cycling manners around some of these girls.

I also wonder what would have happened if a male hubber posted something like this?

The "Races" are getting too "easy" for me?

Are you standing on the podium after these "easy" races?

There's bike washes, lube stations, great food (not just carbs), massage stations at joberg2c, sani2c, 3towers, kalahari challege. And lots of (free) wine and great food at desert knights. And if you were going to become the next Gunn-rita then you would have done these events anyway.

As an alternative to a spa day (or -weekend) this sounds great.

To try to get more women into the sport: maybe that wasn't the target anyway.

But pedi's and mani's and leasurely rides through vinyards? Sounds absolutely great as a girls weekend away: get a few girlfriends together to celebrate graduating or for a kitchen tea or a 40th birthday party. If that was the intention then this sounds great.

why are there no mens only races with whisky tastings at the finish and strippers to clean the bikes, in that case?? Thanks cargyrl for helping enlighten these boys.

You seem to have stumbled upon an amazing business idea.  :whistling:

You still have to think about the meals, accomodation and chill zones.

And i didnt queue at sani or use a headlight to brush my teeth either..#justsaying. I did however have a massage and enjoyed great food including salads. If you had offered me a pedi i probably would have been to tired to accept because i was there to ride, not to be pampered.

Maybe not my place to make any comments, but I really struggle to see why some women (almost typed girls, oops) are so offended? Would you prefer a female only race where they only have unhealthy food and no tec support?

Flipped it past my so and neither she nor her friends see the problem...

And apparently I'm not a chauvinist pig for fixing a ladies flat

You know I haven't been on the hub for a while but nothing seems to have changed. Still filled with lots of people who have nothing better to do than bitch about stuff that should actually be exciting.

Maybe some of you guys should do the stage race. Sure they have a category for Biatches aged 2-4.

LOL!

I think there are more touring ladies than racing ones .My wife and daughter did a bike tour in France where they rode 70km a day and enjoyed every minute .The only hiccup was a frenchie  bike shop owner that refused to help them with their bike setup ,because he was jealous of the organizer

Personally, think people are making more fuss than there actually is over this, and it seems opinion is pretty split on the idea. So maybe that itself is telling.

Spoke to a friend who is starting out riding and she asked me about this event because she read the release and was frustrated by the lack of info even after emailing the address on the 'under construction site'

She's damn fit and with a some riding experience will give most guys a hiding. What I really liked though was her comment to me at the end of talking about the event...

"I like girl's weekends away, I get that not everyone see's the appeal of this event and sure may even be critical about it and that's great. But I really don't need any bra burners or 'dudes' to get on their high horse and be offended on my behalf, I'm an adult and I can decide for myself. Maybe they should find real things to deal with"

I will do it if it's a challenge and riding thru areas one doesn't usually get to ride thru. I like the atmosphere created on "woman's only" events but I don't want dumbed down trails so I can't wait to hear more info.

I personally reckon with out the "pressure" put on at mainstream events that ladies can cope extremely well on tough stuff :)
