Knox, Evans to settle unfinished Cape Epic business

By Press Office · 53 comments

Former South African marathon champions Max Knox and Kevin Evans will renew their stage racing partnership at next month’s ABSA Cape Epic as Team Biogen-Volcan. But they’re not going to the world’s most prestigious mountain bike stage race to make up the numbers; they’re aiming for podium places.

Evans is no stranger to the Cape Epic podium. He’s won four stages, finished second overall once and third overall three times. He’s completed nine of the 11 editions of the iconic race, with injury and illness keeping him from a full house of finishes.

“Ten a nice round number to aim for. But I’m more interested in competing for some podiums than just finishing my tenth,” said Evans.

“Max and I are focussing specifically on the Cape Epic this year and have set ourselves two goals – compete for the African team title and a top five finish overall. We feel that those are realistic goals.

In their first Cape Epic as teammates, Evans and Knox finished 15th overall last year. That included a one-hour time penalty given after Evans cut a corner on a crowded switchback climb.

“Last year wasn’t a great year for us. We were in a negative space from the start. Max was strong enough to compete for the overall win, but I was already over-raced when we arrived there. This year we’re out to regain some credibility and race with a positive mindset,” said Evans.

Evans and Knox will only do three events with a total of nine race days before they line up as the No. 10 seeds for the Cape Epic prologue on Table Mountain on Sunday 15 March.

“With the backing of Biogen, we have been able to follow our ideal preparation strategy. I have also been able to assemble what I call my ‘A Team’ as our support crew this year. Gary Stanley (manager), Roger Blewett (mechanic), Sandi Bryan (chef) and Martin Glinister (masseuse) will make sure that all we have to worry about is the race. You can’t be competitive at this race without an experienced crew like this.”

Knox, 26, is a decade younger than Evans and feels he still has much to achieve at the Cape Epic. He has started seven and completed six editions of the race, most of those as a back-up support rider to others who have gone on to win the race.

“I’ve still got a lot of Cape Epic racing left to do and I’m grateful for the opportunity that Biogen has given Kevin and I for a second shot as teammates at the Cape Epic. We were leading the African team competition last year and lying eighth overall when we were given a time penalty, which really wacked our motivation for the rest of the race. This year we’re focussed on completing some unfinished business,” smiled Knox.

“Biogen is committed to re-investing in sport through sponsorships of events, teams and individuals. We’re celebrating our 10th anniversary as a leading and tested sports supplement brand this year and are pleased to support Kevin and Max in their quest for Cape Epic success,” said Brandon Fairweather, Biogen Marketing Manager.

“As an exclusive seller of Biogen, Dis-Chem is passionate about sport and we’re excited to be involved in the backing of Team Biogen-Volcan for this year’s Cape Epic. It’s a premium level international sports event and we’re looking forward to seeing this all-South African team achieve their potential,” said Stan Goetsch of Dis-Chem.

Knox and Evans finished second and third respectively at the recent Trans Hajar, a five-day stage race in Oman. They will also compete at the Ashburton Investments Series Ultra-marathon at Sabie on Saturday and the Garden Route 300 stage race in Knysna later this month as their final preparation races for the Cape Epic.

They are riding Volcan bikes, a South African mountain bike brand that’s developed a range of models that are suited to marathons and stage races.

would rather see James Reid make a name for himself on the world XCO stage......

say what you like XCM is still plays 2nd fiddle internationally.

Exactly. Reid isn't competing in the Epic, as he has said on numerous occasions that he considers himself an XCO rider, not XCM.

South Africans are obsessed with XCM, but internationally XCO is where the prestige and money lies. How many people on this site ever mention Absalon, but he is without a doubt probably (one of) the greatest MTB'ers of all time.

Put Reid on a XCO course with guys like Evans, Knox and most of our SA marathon heroes and he'll wipe the floor with them.

Pair him with Craig Boyes....

With all due respect, not in the same league.

Rourke Croeser and Travis Walker is who I'm watching this year. I think these two are going to make wave in the years to come.

Yes they are.. I had it all mixed up..[emoji85]

I just really hope that RECM send Reid to Europe to ride as many xco world cups as possible, he needs to ride against the best as often as possible.

What do the international guys have that ours don't, apart from the moolah?[/quote ]the Europeans have Europe, which is probably where 95% of the top races are held.

Take a look at the uni mtb rankings, Switzerland have something like 10 guys in the top 30.it didn't just happen

They won't show on any podium- old news in terms of pro riders IMO...

Especially if they have to ride the whole route and not whinge about being bust taking shortcuts...

To use someone else's quote "what a stupid statement".

What a stupid statement...

it was said tongue in cheek, but if you really feel I'm stupid for perhaps believing it then I am afraid your are short-sighted my friend.

Find out why none of the big names in marathon mtb are not  training and prepping for the Epic like previous years on our shores.

On the hub no negative statement or even an inferred one about him is tolerated. Consider this your first warning, even though I'm sure an Emma letter is already on it's way for "claiming" he took a shortcut.

Going to be super tough for them to get a podium....I really hope they do!!

judging on recent results highly unlikely. Good luck to them.

Why?

I have not read anything about it, although I have noticed the BIG names are not here already, except for Sahm who moved his whole family to Stellies recently and know his part of the Bulls backup/support team.

What sounds better, team biocan or team volgen?

I think kevEv's best shot at epic glory was not with DG, but the time he teamed up with the Albanator. In my mind he still has a bit to prove that he can get back to his best, and I think a top 10 is more realistic than a podium.

Besides the exposure to world class racing and competitors, the fields are LARGE and the only way you get close to the front is by being fast...simple.

Just go to a world cup XCO event in Europe and see how many riders are on the start line compared to SA xco, if you are mid pack or further back on the first lap its unlikely you will in finish in the top 20.

In switz they have a lot of cycling clubs who make a huge effort to encourage youngsters to take part, not only encourage them but provide hands on coaching. I remember a few years ago I did a XCO race on the local swiss circuit and went to the track a few days before the event to practice, the track was quite technical with some serious drops and a ski jump. There was a course for the kiddies which was much shorter and easier which excluded all the drops and ski jump. The day I was there were +/- 20 kids from some club riding the full xco course as a group with a coach who made them stop at each technical section, he showed and explained how they should ride it and then one by one they would try it (only if they wanted to). These kids were < 12 yrs and already some of them had really good skills.

I have been waiting for Platt to announce that they are SA bound, normally they are already here.

Saw Nino tweet something about heading to SA this week, haven't seen anything that he is riding the epic this yr, maybe a change of heart or perhaps just some training in warmer conditions. He has been doing a lot of skiing lately even came 2e in a skiing cross country event

I like both Knox and Evens. Would like to see them have a good contest for the African jersey. In the GC i can't see them performing at all

I see there is a comment higher up about the top contenders not showing their hands at local races this year. Also noticed that apart from Lakata en co

I like how everybody has a comment on how these athletes will be performing, how they have no chance. Yes we have our favourites, and we all have a right to give an opinion but maybe everybody should stop and think that these athletes also read these social forums, it makes a person negative to read the crap some people make up sitting behind a desk while the professional athletes are out bleeding sweat and tears to be in the best form they can be. maybe if more people believed in the good of them not just the negative they will actually perform... its easy to sit back and commentate, lets put ourselves in their shoes, wont be so glorious... im backing any south african who can get on that GC podium...

Sign me up, I'll gladly get out there and train rather than suck up the BS in a corporate office. Poor lambs..... I cannot imagine how tough it must be out there. Maybe some of these guys did not do cover themselves in glory? African team on the GC podium - Scott.

Yes, we are behind our little desks bleeding sweat and tears to make a living every day, not going to apologize for making comments while we're not able to make the GC podiums. 99% of us are behind South Africans, BUT you also have to be realistic. It's good they read our comments, we know they are Hub haters, hopefully it will motivate them even more to get their behinds into gear to get on the podiums for a change against the international competition (not the local fun-riders or weekend warriors) to prove us wrong and stop whining all the time!

Edit: Or get someone like you to come on here and whine for them, even more pathetic....
