Kevin Evans accepts doping charge

By Press Office · 1614 comments

Cycling South Africa reports that the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) has charged mountain bike cyclist, Kevin Evans with doping after identifying serious irregularities in his Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) – a profile of the athlete’s blood parameters.

Mr. Evans accepted the charge of doping and did not contest the findings. The ABP is a longitudinal analysis and the suspicious readings were identified over a period of time, therefore the athlete’s results extending back to 14 March 2014 will be disqualified, with all of the resulting consequences, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.

He will be banned from sport for four years as of 4 March 2015 until 3 March 2019. The athlete has however indicated that he has retired from professional cycling.

Cycling South Africa respects the independence of the SAIDS process. Cycling South Africa further reiterates its zero-tolerance approach to doping in sport and will continue working with SAIDS in the promotion of a drug-free sport via its awareness and extensive testing programmes.

Imagine if Froome sent an Emma letter to everybody who directly calls him a doper, never mind inferring it.... Emma would be rich!!

Exactly, and a bit off-topic, anyone seen what anti-hunters are capable of spewing at hunters' posts of Facebook/Instagram (death wishes/threats is an understatement). Imagine if they were all to be sent lawyers letters!

I went to take a look @robbiehunter twitter page and was surprised to see he's blocked me.

I kinda have an idea why but at least there hasn't been a lawyers letter from him yet

This is why testing the statement could have proved interesting. However, had I been slapped with a lawyer's letter, which it must be said, is nothing more than a lawyer's letter, I too would have gone, 'ah stuff it' and deleted a few tweets and carried on with my life. Would middle class folk in SA really get a couple hundy thousand rondt together to klap handbags at dawn over something like that? Not a freakin chance, most are too sensible and know better than to engage in something financially draining and which will deliver scant reward beyond a hearty 'I told you so'. The gamble is worth it for the dodgy operator though...it is a game of chicken, if you blink first and fast, guess what, everyone wins. Unless you are DIRECTLY interested in some good old vengeance, it just isn't worth it.

You okes who have had divorces should know full well what it means to get The Law involved. Proves PDQ that it is not an ass, it is an EXPENSIVE ass. And nobody likes that kind of ass...

Alas, I'm not allowed to bin the lawyers letters I get however tempting it may be to do so.

There's usually not too much brinkmanship involved in threats of defamation suits. A reasoned reply setting out the justification for whatever was published and why the lawyer's demand won't be acceded to is usually where it ends.

Nope, just in general when there's an "outrage" when some foreigner shoots some of the big 5 and posts it on social media, but let's rather leave that for another thread...

The clever way to fight the defamation suit - and save face - would have been to post something like this: "I have been contacted by lawyers representing Kevin Evans concerning my comment posted on social media. Evans is, according to his representatives, of the opinion that my comment that stated he had had bad form in races since his partner tested positive for banned a banned substances inferred that he too was a doper. This was not my intention. I apologize to those to whom that impression was made." Repeat the libel while apologizing for it. Works a treat.

Run it's course this thread... need some more juice.

Maybe we could get the Doctor in to share his thoughts (in more than 140 characters) - anybody on Tweeter who could maybe pull him in here

I see BS's wife also spewed some vitriol at iplayfairza on Twitter about Kevin's bust. It seems she believes KS's excuse and schemes that SAIDS is the devil reincarnated.

Okay, closing argument time. I know many of the players in this drama from both sides personally, and there have been many missteps. My take: Dopers are unprincipled. Call them out. But do so in a principled way.

I once had a boss who spoke before thinking the matter through. A colleague made this observation which I have never forgotten:

"He speaks faster than he remembers"

In another job, someone (who is now also on this forum) coined a phrase just as apt:

"Ready FIRE, aim!"

The thing is, if we speak everything that just jumps in our heads we end up regretting it at some point. Things that are said, cannot be unsaid. the words are out there and they cannot be deleted just by wishing we had an "undo" button.
