Kevin Evans accepts doping charge

By Press Office · 1614 comments

Cycling South Africa reports that the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) has charged mountain bike cyclist, Kevin Evans with doping after identifying serious irregularities in his Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) – a profile of the athlete’s blood parameters.

Mr. Evans accepted the charge of doping and did not contest the findings. The ABP is a longitudinal analysis and the suspicious readings were identified over a period of time, therefore the athlete’s results extending back to 14 March 2014 will be disqualified, with all of the resulting consequences, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.

He will be banned from sport for four years as of 4 March 2015 until 3 March 2019. The athlete has however indicated that he has retired from professional cycling.

Cycling South Africa respects the independence of the SAIDS process. Cycling South Africa further reiterates its zero-tolerance approach to doping in sport and will continue working with SAIDS in the promotion of a drug-free sport via its awareness and extensive testing programmes.

Not really. David Millar has been trying to clean up his act and give back to the sport.

Utter charlatan and hypocrite.

I've said it before - if you have seen the pace at the sharp end of a MTB classic race, there is very little chance of 'pane e acqua' riders keeping up, no matter how much training you do. All the names being busted comes as zero surprise; there is no way a normal person can go full gas for 6-plus hours, no matter how much training you put in (I know I put in the training and despite being a fairly capable athlete, there was an obvious 2-speed race going on, with the selection being made within minutes).

I remember seeing Shaun Mackenzie, who is a really good cyclist, off the back of the Barberton or maybe Sabie Classic ultra in the first 20km; he was like 'no way man, those guys are crazy'. On-form SM getting dropped like a little kid by a whole group of pros is 'pas normal'.

were you not in hospital or something for a broken something or other ?

Yup. But other than strong pain killers, all I was guilty of was my own incompetence :( I have now stopped taking banned substances and my performance will, I think, improve dramatically... Namely fruitcake, lemon meringue, pizza and ice cream.

Ja, ja, then you make a miraculous comeback and suddenly start turning in sterling performances...we've heard it all before.

It's actually funny you say that - after being horizontal over the whole holiday, doing sweet sod all, I hopped on the steed and felt absolutely amazing. I have thus determined that one week on, three weeks off is the best training for me. :) And as I said somewhere else, being in too much pain to have an appetite definitely helps the power to weight ratio.

I doubt I will make any money off my new 'Crashin' Diet' though. (Reg TM, copyright 2016, Thornton Regina Buttocks)

If you're denied a TUE then dont race. I'd love to see all these affadavits saying he applied for a TUE but they denied it. Its just a BS fact that he's made up to cover his ass

If you're so sick that you need ozone treatment, then how can you even be racing.

According to his statement, he was tested out of competition, two weeks after coming out of ICU.

Based on his statement, this would have been to the end of September 2013 (not much year left to compete to train and compete in anything).

Thus 2014 would be a good cut off in terms of the sanctions.

So, he received ozone therapy in Sept 2013, for "life threatening illness."  If it's true no problem.  But.... that's not why he was banned.  He was banned for offenses in 2014-15.

I can't believe that increased O2 levels will still be present 6 months later.  Surely if he was banned for the spike in oxygen levels caused by the therapy his ban would be from the when the spike was detected (Sept 13, plus 6 weeks perhaps?)

hmmm, good point. Interesting to know the exact reasoning for 14 March being the date

I know he is retired, so it's purely academic, but it's interesting that he received a 4 year ban and not the normal 2 years. Wonder if there were some aggravating circumstances.

So much for Sinamatella's An Epic Tale. That's both their stars gone. Still enjoyed it, wonder if we can get it on sale now. :w00t:

All he had to do was follow Ryan's example. Hey Presto, reputation intact.

The new standard is 4 years unless there are extenuating circumstances, like assisting authorities etc...........like that has ever worked.

I am sure many people will be suspicious of his most recent partner now too which was Max Knox.

Let's hope that Max is the exception to the norm and didn't follow the other 3 guys down that road.... Time will tell though.

How many appendixes can you possibly have ..?

I thought we were all issued with one only..?

According to KE:

"repeated episodes of intra-abdominal sepsis due to an appendectomy performed at the end of 2010(1).

“In October 2012 he had to undergo another operation to drain and remove an abscess in his abdomen, followed by a second appendectomy and further abdominal surgery again in December" (2)

In some cases it is known to grow back or when removed not completely removed. Had it happen to a friend of mine too!
