Italian mountain biker Riccardo Chiarini has tested positive for EPO

Italian mountain biker Riccardo Chiarini, who finished fourth overall in the 2014 Absa Cape Epic with partner Roel Paulissen of Belgium (Team Torpado Factory), has tested positive for unusually high levels of EPO.

The former road professional was tested out-of-competition on May 7 this year by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). The finding of excessive EPO (erythropoietin) was made in terms of the biological passport system. Torpado, the Italian bicycle manufacturer and team sponsor, confirmed it had been informed of the positive test results and had suspended the rider with immediate effect pending any appeal.

The Absa Cape Epic last year introduced a zero tolerance approach to doping in terms of which anybody found guilty of an offence committed after December 31, 2012, would be banned from the event for life. “As things stand, therefore, Chiarini is suspended from the Absa Cape Epic and will be given a lifetime ban if the finding is confirmed,” said Absa Cape Epic spokesperson Chris Whitfield.

Chiarini and Paulissen won Stage 5 of the 2014 Absa Cape Epic on their way to the fourth place overall. In terms of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) testing protocol, at least one of the Torpado riders would have been tested after winning the stage. The South African Institute for Drug Free Sport (SAIDS), which carried out the testing at the Absa Cape Epic for the UCI, has not yet released its findings.

Because Chiarini’s out-of-competition test was carried out after the Absa Cape Epic, it does not effect his 2014 race results.

The biological passport system depends on testing of an individual athlete’s biological markers over a period of time. Doping violations are detected by noting variances from established levels.

The Absa Cape Epic’s rule on doping states: “Any person who is under provisional or final sanction by an Anti-Doping Organisation with jurisdiction under the WADA Code (a “person under sanction”) is prohibited from participating or being involved in the race, whether as a rider, team manager or official or in any other capacity whatsoever. Where any such sanction has been made final for an offence committed after 31 December 2012, such prohibition shall apply for the life of the person under sanction (irrespective of the duration of the sanction imposed by the relevant Anti-Doping Organisation).”

must say I do appreciate the Cape Epic taking a proper stance against dopers, pity same can't be said for other events and teams, managers, sponsors etc......

Cant agree more....if the UCI is to slapgat to do it, the races will.....zero tolerance is the only way this will be stopped.

Then you should give back all your podium finishes.

Why is it that overseas riders can referred to as being tested positive for drugs but local riders only have "adverse analytical findings"?

When will it stop? They should be banned for life, no chances! If they take drugs for reason, they should report to UCI or race organiser....

If they want clean sport, get rid of all cyclists, managers, coaches, doctors, who used to take drugs before...

Enough! enough!

The nonsense continues.....

Nobody knew exactly why Sergio Henao was stopped from racing and now, having been shrouded in doubt, nobody knows what’s convinced the scientists and the team that he’s ok to return to the Tour de Suisse. Sharing the data with the UCI and WADA’s laudable but as well as science there’s a PR battle and with it the team needs to convince those who don’t wear lab coats, especially the French public.

Team Sky have probably missed a pedagogic trick to inform and even bore fans with scientific lectures on values, both haematological and educational. The team said in a press release they hope that in due course a paper will be released but in today’s world of social media judgement and with the Tour de France just weeks away, hoping an academic paper might appear in due course is asking fans and sceptics alike to trust the team.

Currently much of the news about Team Sky comes from the outside, Wiggins told L’Equipe he was unlikely to ride the Tour de France and the same newspaper got the scoop Henao could lead in the Tour de Suisse.

And contrary to what Paulissen claims:

Clomiphene is a doping substance according to the Penal Code. Particularly men, who use anabolic steroids, commonly use clomiphene or other anti-estrogens (for example, tamoxifen) as an accompanying drug.

The purpose of clomiphene, in this case, is to inhibit the estrogen problems caused by the overdosed anabolic steroids, that appear when anabolic steroids convert in the body to estrogens or other metabolic products that have estrogenic effetcs. These problems, in men, include the over-growth of breasts (gynecomastia) and blood coagulation disturbances.

Even though clomiphene accelerates testosterone secretion, its muscle growth increasing effect is in practice insignificant. It should also be noted that with large doses, clomiphene changes from anti-estrogen to estrogen. Small doses block estrogen receptors, but large doses stimulate them. Because of that, clomiphene is not used in large doses.

The Epic should in all honesty, not be welcoming him back either :cursing:

Yip agree Andrew....it will be awesome if they are banned from the epic in any form...from team management to rider...No place for these losers
