GoPro announces Karma drone, Hero5 lineup and more

By Press Office · 90 comments

GoPro, Inc. today unveiled new products and services that dramatically simplify the process of capturing, editing and sharing engaging content, establishing GoPro as an end-to-end storytelling solution.

GoPro’s founder and CEO, Nicholas Woodman, introduced a new line of HERO5 cameras, cloud-based software, and drone, Karma, to international press at the base of Squaw Valley, CA, near Lake Tahoe. The event was broadcast live and can be seen HERE.

“With these new products, we’re delivering on our promise to make it easy to capture and share engaging stories,” said Woodman.

“HERO5’s ability to auto-upload photos and videos to a GoPro Plus account dramatically simplifies mobile, on-the-go editing, sharing and enjoyment. This is a game-changing experience that we will continue to build upon.”

Woodman adds, “We’re stoked to launch Karma and show how much more it is than a drone. Karma packs Hollywood-caliber aerial, handheld and gear-mounted image stabilization into a backpack. It’s so easy to use, a beginner can have fun straight away.”

In addition to significant gains in performance and convenience, GoPro’s all-new HERO5 line of cameras can auto-upload photos and videos to GoPro Plus, a cloud-based subscription service that makes it easy to access, edit and share GoPro content anytime, anywhere using a phone or computer.

There's some web whispering about footage from the Mavic....a bit soft, not as crisp as the P4....see Casey's footage...compromise or inherent to Youtube downscaling? Say it ain't so....

As someone who knows absolutely nothing about Drones but wants to get one, I see the following in favour of the Karma:

- removable camera that i can use elsewhere

- removable gimble to provide stability elsewhere

- small & compact

- etc.

Against the Karma:

- no "follow-me" function

- no "come home" function

- no "object avoidance"

ps. still planning to ask Santa for one this X-mas

For my money even the older Dji Phantom 3 Pro 4k still wins hands down, 2nd Dji Mavic and 3rd the GoPro Karma

Apparently there is some touch to focus that casey never used but that seems a little far fetched, at that distance from the subject everything should be in focused/focused at infinity?

Just got my Hero 5 Black, currently setting it up and charging it. Can't wait to see the footage and editing it in FCP this evening. Stock of the Hero 5 Session will only arrive later this month.

Edit: Some raw video footage on my way home

Will need to invest in a external mic and recorder, wind too noisy.

Love the voice prompt and the iPhone app to view the live footage to see if the angle on the helmet is correct. Configuring the cam settings on the app also works like a charm.

Here's a Mtb ride video I made yesterday using the GoPro Hero5, I'm very impressed, especially the stabilization and because it's a htail with a rigid carbon Niner fork.

Sheesh, that is impressive. It almost makes it look to smooth and not bumpy at all. Which is kinda sad really as it takes away from the "reality" of the ride - but on the other hand makes it look awesome.

You have the option to switch stabilization off. Also, as far as I know and what I can see, the stabilization option is not available when shooting in 4k. This mtb video was shot in 1080p 60 fps in linear view.

The reality of the ride means that the video will be unwatchable, if you want to convey the scenery, and the layout of a track, this is useful.

Nothing worse than the motion sickness inducing video of a handlebar mounted camera on a rough track.

But as with everything, the pricetag is way above my ability

Quik crit of the new GoPro 5:

Voice control: mehh....mounted on bars, and more than 5 kph....fail....mounted on helmet ....100%

Recording indicators: silly, almost invisible, nothing on top or underneath...   will have to trim start and finish of a lot of clips of checking to see if its on!

Stabilisation:

Audio: excellent

Battery: life: mmmmm same old, same old.., no spares available yet, new external charger also required (Wasabi already out with spares and charger)

Cable: USB C...meh!

Form factor: Great, slighter higher that GP4 so a few mods required for gimbal (Zhiyun tech Rider M)

Waterproof: no housing required up to 10m...

Lens protection:   because you can replace front glass,  no spare front glass out yet

Screen: works with glove   , intuitive...

Video specs: same...

FOV: Linear

RAW and Wide Dynamic Range pics

GPS: available but pointless (switched off to save battery)...holding out that they expand its use via firmware updates

PROTUNE: more options available especially to assist low light.

So biggest plusses are waterproof, stabilisation and linear FOV....voice control only if camera is close by...

If GPS matures, it'll be cool too but they will need to overhaul GoPro Studio to be like VIRB software.

Lekka!!!

Hey guys. I'm still fresh when it comes to Gopro cameras. Can anyone post a link or explain what the field of veiw does and the different camera settings like when do you use 2.7k etc and why do you change fps. Basically what settings do I use in what situations?

Ps. I have googled but I might be asking the wrong questions as it is not helping much.
