First Look: 2016 Momsen VIPA XT

By Nick · 71 comments

Momsen’s VIPA is a proven marathon and cross-country race machine and we’ve got the scoop on the upcoming 2016 VIPA XT.

The first thing you’ll notice about the 2016 Momsen VIPA XT is the striking white, black and orange colour scheme. It’s a bold departure from Momsen’s previous designs. The top tube maps part of the Baakens Valley trail in Port Elizabeth. This is where Momsen do much of their development and testing.

Also new for the 2016 VIPA XT is the provision for a second bottle cage mount within the frame’s front triangle. Limited to the Medium and Large sized frames, a custom adaptor can be bought to mount a bottle cage. This placement was achieved without impacting standover height and changing the top tube shape, and manages to keep the weight of the bottle in a low central position.

Other than the additional bottle cage mount, there have been no significant changes to the VIPA design. Considering the success of Kargo PRO MTB and Alan Hatherly’s 2015 SA XCO Cup title, Momsen are happy with the way the current VIPA performs in marathon and XCO racing. For those looking to jump on the longer and slacker bandwagon, the VIPA Trail is expected to launch in 2016 and should fill that gap.

The components of the VIPA XT, however, have seen many updates. The bike features a full M8000 XT groupset, Fox’s new Float 32 fork (with the Fit 4 damper) and Float DPS shock, ZTR Crest rims on Shimano XT hubs, and custom Vee Tire Co Rail tires.

The 2016 Momsen range will be unveiled at the Two Wheels Trading dealer launch on the 12th August in Johannesburg. Authorized Dealers will have information and details on the full range after the launch. The 2016 VIPA XT should arrive in mid August.

Cant agree more, although the 'FABULAAAS' at the end might have put a dent in your argument.

Hey, Im a "boertjie", anytime I get to act like someone from another culture I am bound to mess it up... LOL

It's matte black and red, with some white. Oh and some scribble on the top tube.

Always great to see everyone is an expert here.....

I can almost guarantee 90% of you guys moaning about the bike probably needs to get some more love from "mamma".

The facts are.

  • ALL dealerships have launches EVERY year... that's where they show their new bikes. Its not the launch of an all new bike like car dealers do with say a whole new model. The fact that you dont know this  proves how expert your opinions are.

The differences are.. (LET ME SPELL IT OUT FOR YOU)

  • ALL new XT 11 speed groupset (OBVIAAAS)
  • Upgraded Fork from EVO to Performance series
  • Hubs(XT)- NO ONE has ridden these apart form probably a hand full of testers, So wait to ride it before you judge or. Might be good (just sayin)
  • Second bottle cage (OBVIAS) Not alot of dual sus bikes allow 2 bottle cages and also keeps the center of gravity low, which, had you ridden your bikes and not moan on the hub, as you do, you would know is a big deal.
  • New Saddle
  • New Tyre
  • Internal cable issue- Try replacing it... on your own... you will beg for external. Also when the cable runs on the inside allot of times it rusts up a lot quicker. Solid housing prevents this there are also less exposed bends the cable can grind against causing friction

As we all know Orange is the new black...

If you don't like the bike... ride it, it will change your opinion.

I have ridden allot of bikes in my times. This thing is flippen good.

By the way. Think how boring our lives would have been if all our bikes was matte black with some sort of gloss decal.. BLEH wheres the imagination.

When you were a kid, did you color in using black only(NO) and you had much more fun back then, be a kid again, isnt that why we ride our bikes, to forget about the daily lives making us grumpy forum bitchers.

Dont think like that man, HAVE FUN. Ride an flippen pink bike if its up you alley. Who cares.

BIG UPS Team MOMSEN! I think its FABULAAAS.. Oh and ps.. Cant wait to get mine in a couple of weeks.

whahahhaa enjoy your bike bud, I really hope it gives you lots of miles and smiles...BUT

Its not a facelift...its a new paintjob. All the "new" things you mentioned can be bought and fitted to an original vipa and it would be the same. Your "facts" are based on you will be an owner soon. You have to like it.

Rouxtjie, not true.

You cant add a second bottle cage to current frames, bosses moved up in the frame, current frame do not have bosses on seat tube.

Let us have our brand and enjoy our bikes, have mine for 18months and still enjoy every ride.

I like the 2nd waterbottle cage idea. it shows that some serious through went into it, and i suppose it is an acceptable compromise that doesn't hinder performance.

the real weight weenies could always just find their own adaption of this old skool bodge

Sure meneer, enjoy the bike and brand they are awesome I am sure. Can't fault the bike's capabilities. En jy is reg, my post klink bitter...Haal my voet uit my mond...

Ps ek smaak external routing, ek koop nie n bike met internals nie...jy hoef net een keer cables te verander. Pss ek is ook nie spez man nie.

Okay, to the haters of the colour on the XT edition. Saw one of them at Bloemendal yesterday, and it looks positively gorgeous.

The colours work. Gave it a good look, and it looks superb.

I check now they removed pat's signature from the top tube...heck that was the bike's no1 selling point.

LOL. It's was Raydek's inaugural Reign Ride on his new Reign 2. Was kinda taking it slow, given that it was also the handover for his wife to get his old bike.

Verdict on his new bike though - F*** ME, it's FAST!
