Entries for the 2014 SA BMX National Championships and the 2014 UCI African Continental Championships, which will be held at Giba Gorge, KwaZulu-Natal, on 25 and 26 October, are now open.
The two separate events will be held at South Africa’s, and Africa’s, first purpose-built Supercross track at Giba Gorge, near Pinetown.
The annual National Championships always attract the country’s top riders to compete for the National titles in their respective categories. This year will be no different, with the added benefit of the African continent competing for Continental Championship honours on Sunday 26 October.
“This is the first time that Africa is hosting a Continental Championships for BMX racing,” said Cycling SA BMX Commissioner, Margot Gerber. “The fact that it is on South African soil gives our athletes a huge advantage and a great opportunity to earn some UCI points towards the Rio 2016 Olympic qualification.”
The 2014 UCI African Continental Championships is the first of three Continental Championship events to take place in KwaZulu-Natal in a four-month period. Cycling South Africa has secured the 2015 African Continental Track Cycling Championships (21-25 January) and the 2015 African Continental Road Cycling Championships (9-14 February) in the City of Pietermaritzburg, further cementing the on going plans in place with KwaZulu-Natal Government and the Department of Sport and Recreation in support of the city as the African UCI Bike City.
