By BikeHubCoreAdmin · 4 comments

The news hit this morning that Johan Labuschagne was hit by a taxi this morning and we, like most cyclists in South Africa have had enough.

We decided to chat to a few of the role players this morning to get their comment on the incident. First up we chatted to Andrew Mclean who tweeted pictures of the accident this morning to find out exactly what happened.

We then gave Edna Mamonyane from the JMPD a call to see what the police are doing to keep us as cyclists safe on the road and finally we touched base with Steve Hayward, the chairman of the Pedal Power Association to see what we as cyclists can do to improve the situation on our roads.

ja well ... the show doesn't really tackle the crux of the matter imo. The root of the pandemic is the culture of bad driving. Too many bad drivers on our roads, yes the 1m rule is step fwd, but not really going to help when there is a fundamental lack of driving skills, sense of responsibility. and no respect for other road users. Give way? no way!

One solution is a serious up of the game for the awarding of drivers licenses. Look at what you have to go through to get a firearm license. A moving car is a weapon and can kill (esp, cyclists) so what's the diffs? And look at a Pilots License: lots of theory, very thorough training, taught to deal with all sorts of situations, and you have to keep current. Getting a Drivers License is trivial in comparison, and that context the carnage on the roads can be understood.
