Croeser contravenes UCI medical rules

By Press Office · 243 comments

National team rider Rourke Croeser was found to be in possession of a syringe at the recent World MTB Championships in Andorra. This is in direct contravention of the UCI Medical rules and specifically in relation to the sub-section “Ban on Injections”. The possession of syringes is in violation of UCI Medical rule 13.03.058 (2). The rule states:

13.3.058 In addition to the sanctions stipulated in article 13.3.057 the following shall apply:

1. In case of infringement of article 13.3.055 all results obtained by the rider in the 48 hours period shall be disqualified.

2. In case a violation of article 13.3.052 occurs at a race the licence holder(s) concerned and, where appropriate, the whole team of the licence holder(s) at fault may be excluded from the race; in this respect the possession of objects used or fit for an injection shall be presumed to constitute evidence of a violation of article 13.3.052 having been committed except if the objects are in the possession of the medical doctor who has made the report referred to in article 13.3.052.5 and are covered by such report and except for those objects that may reasonably be in a medical doctor’s possession. The exclusion may be decided by the president of the commissaires’ panel after having given the persons concerned the opportunity to be heard or by the president of the UCI Disciplinary Commission upon report by the president of the commissaires’ panel.

Mr. Croeser voluntarily withdrew from the Championships. The matter is now being dealt with by Cycling South Africa according to the prescribed UCI rules.

William Newman, President of Cycling SA, re-iterated that the National Federation will continue to strive to ensure that riders are aware of the UCI medical rules. Cycling SA will not tolerate any activities by athletes that may be an infringement of UCI medical or anti-doping regulations.

Does anyone know for fact. Is it just a syringe or a syringe with a needle?

Important difference I think,... maybe...

I'm sure it's called the "no needle rule" for a reason

Hairy, still nothing other than the BS that CSA spewed yesterday.

I'm sure the legal kids are doing their thing etc to make sure that it is handled conveniently  correctly.

It would be great to have the full story so the speculation could end and we could move forward. Assuming that it is above board, the situation is not helping the dude going forward.

i'm sure we will not have to wait much longer ............................................................................................................. ..................................................................................................................................................................

To my simple mind I see that there is no question that he was found with a syringe and that is against the rules and a certain sanction should be applied. Is the 'speculation' that is being referred to related to the fact of whether or not he had in fact 'doped' via injection or whatever means? This seems not to be mentioned or confirmed ....

I saw something online stating something along the lines of a syringe and other medial diagnostic equipment......

What is a B-sample in this case?

I suppose they look in his other kitbag to see if there is a syringe in there as well........

I use a syringe to inject a bit of fork oil on my Manitou Marvel's dust seals... It's a diabetic injection needle... Maybe that is all there is to it...

If you were a professional you will not be allowed to have it with you. Does not matter what he wanted to use it for, it is NOT allowed

Edit: Just make sure you don't scratch the stanchions when you do that to the fork. (I assume you put the needle between the the wiper and the stanchions)

In response to those speculating to how it could have been found, it could've been a "random" (aka targeted) search by anti-doping guys. Interestingly enough, whilst I travelled with my team into France from Belgium in August, we were pulled off by the French douane (customs). Our camper and team car (which we rented from Caja Rural) was thoroughly searched. They went as far as reading through our team manager's notebook! Apparently it is standard procedure for them to stop and search cycling team vehicles in an attempt to find illegal substances.

Perhaps it was something to this extent and Rourke's bag was searched? However, I doubt that Andorran customs would be updated on anti-doping laws and having a syringe in your possession isn't illegal. This is why I believe it was a targeted search by anti-doping officials. So what if he was targeted? It doesn't mean he's guilty. I don't think it's fair to pass judgement on the guy just yet.

Edit: Of course, no discretion is needed when the "system" proves he's guilty.

Also, I would just like to add that being in possession of a syringe (if he so happens to be innocent) really sounds like amateur hour. At that level you should know exactly what will land you in trouble

What do you mean by this? He is guilty for breaking a RULE!

I don't think people care what he wanted to use it for, that is another case all together and speculation. But for this, he is guilty. You should not have this on you at all.

Is a HGB analyzer the machine that diabetics would use to test blood suger levels, or is it used for something else?

Very interesting if this turns out to be correct.

Maybe he wanted to see if the level increases after racing at altitude?

No offence, but what has this got to do with a pro caught with a syringe?
