Bike Hub: 2021 Year in Review

By Bike Hub Features · 68 comments

Another 12 months have flown by and once again it’s time to look back at the past year on Bike Hub.

2021 gave us some glimpses of normality, with many more cycling events taking place, albeit on a compressed schedule. And while constrained supply fell short of the demand for new cycling gear, many consumers and retailers looked to the second hand market as a supplementary channel.

The heightened relevance of pre-owned is reflected in our numbers with a record R720 million in stock value listed in 2021 and over R246 million in recorded sales*.

Here’s a look back at 2021 on Bike Hub by the numbers.

Website stats – Headline activity

While more pages were viewed and more time spent on Bike Hub in 2021, we did see a decline in the number of unique users visiting the site. Although South African user numbers remained steady year-on-year, we had considerably fewer International visitors finding Bike Hub via search engines.

Bike Hub Pay
At the end of 2020 we launched Bike Hub Pay, a secure payment service which protects buyers and sellers. In 2021 we helped over 1800 buyers and sellers to trade safely with over R8.5 million in successful deal value.

With usage of the service growing month-on-month and a steady stream of glowing reviews we hope to enable many more safe deals in 2022.

Forum Activity

Overall forum activity saw significant declines in replies and new topics, largely due to a decision made in the first half of 2021 which reduced the scope of non-cycling discussion on the platform.

As anticipated, cutting controversial non-cycling debate lead to a significant drop in comment numbers. From a qualitative perspective this is a drop in numbers we welcome. Amid a digital industry fuelled by outrage and vanity metrics, in this context, quality is certainly better than quantity.

The true measure of whether your rehab worked if your conditioning went through the ceiling with all your added training time 😗

Interesting stats.

How about adding a section for "Longest / oldest Hub member" Hopefully my name will then be on the wall of fame....... Lol.

We can look at a long service award in future editions. We're talking Hub account age and not actual age, right? 😉

But for 2021 you're the 3rd most prolific poster*

There are a few things that I think skews the sales figures a lot.

A lot of guys put a lot of stuff into one advert (especially shops). These sales never gets reported as sales and no price is ever attached. I would remove the ability to list more than one item per advert (a groupset is seen as one item)

And also, seems like Bikehubpay is a good income generator. 😎 It does work however.

We're conscious that a number of factors will skew that top line listings value of R 723 million. As you mention, some ads combine items and use a placeholder price (e.g. R123) which under reports value, while other users repeat ads which over reports. Strictly speaking neither is a behaviour we allow or encourage but both would have a relatively small impact on this number.

Actual sales enabled by Bike Hub is the more meaningful figure and the user-reported figure for 2021 was R246 million. While significant, we know this is well under the actual figure since 60% of ads posted are either deleted (instead of marked sold) or left to expire without feedback on sold status.

I AM, I do follow it, its just frustrating as I had to get friends of friends to get hold of 2 bikes I wanted because the sellers were not responding on the DM I know the one bike is still available and till today no response, saying that I have bought numerous other toys no issues I just think some of the sellers who come here only to sell do not know how to navigate the hub, and I think there are many sales falling through the CRACK

i HAVE SAID many times its not my business its not my call, but the picking apart of a ad. does not help the seller as the not "playing on the thread"

If the seller doesn't want to put a phone number/email or other contact form then how will comments make a difference? they're probably not even logging back in at all.

I wish Admin would bring back allow or create some form of thread where we can discuss any non cycling related topics

For example, CV19, Politics etc....

Bikehub IMHO is poorer for the lack of diversity. As a long time hubber since 2005 and an expat who will never use the classifieds, this was the primary reason i did not renew my bikehub plus membership.

very possible, all I know after I took a break from the hub, I battled navigating through the new hub, I`m old and learn slow, I came back primarily for the classifieds (have the bank damage to show it) I raised the point before call me old school but when I see SOLD by,,, old school(me) thinks its sold (not for sale) as said before i missed 2 bikes as a result of MY ERROR

as I said the "new" hub took me some getting used to especially the PM side of things,,

my simpleton thinking is every time he looks AT HIS AD  he sees the comments,,, anyway dead horse,, ill stay in my lane
