Bike Check: Alan Hatherly’s Olympic Giant Anthem

By BikeHubCoreAdmin · 55 comments

Alan Hatherly will be representing South Africa in the Rio Olympic XCO on Sunday (17:30 SA time) aboard his Giant Anthem X. Alan races professionally for Kargo Pro Cycling Team with Giant South Africa as the team’s bike sponsor.

To celebrate Alan’s achievement, his Anthem X underwent some special treatment from Graham Kidson at Carbon Craft, coming up with a custom South African themed paint scheme.

Alan will be using a full Shimano XTR drivetrain to propel his bike with XTR Race brakes doing the stopping. He has elected to go with a single chainring setup using either a 32 or 34 tooth ring with a 11-40 cassette.

A RockShox SID World Cup fork absorbs the impacts on the front while a Fox Float shock does duty on the rear. The Fox Float has a remote lockout using a Shimano shifter to flip between settings.

Alan likes his handlebars low, using a negative 17 degree Ritchey stem to hold his Giant carbon handlebar while sitting on a Fizik M3 saddle and Giant Contact Composite seatpost.

The bike rolls on a Mavic Crossmax SLR wheelset wrapped in Continental Race King tyres. If the course is loose, Alan prefers to ride a X King on the front for added grip and should things turn wet he’ll reach for a Mud King.

We rather bash, comment, cyber bully and be stupid about things. When did we as people become so feeble minded that we can't see the good in something and just wish everyone the best for achieving what they have achieved? What will you and I be doing this weekend when that guy is representing his country at the Ofreakinglympics?

I'm not sure thats what happened here dude.

There was a punny made about Epics, a comment about vertical shocks, something about tyres, compliments on the spray job, question about sponsor logos (this probably more inline with the stupid Olympics rules), a sincere question about the rider, a comment about Giant vs the competition and something about 29ers.

Nowhere was there bashing or cyber bullying about the rider AT ALL???

I think everybody is supportive of him and will be cheering him on.

As for what I will be doing this weekend? I will be sitting on couch, beer in hand, mouth full of Pringles shouting at the cyclist to HTFU and to stop riding like pussies! ;)

Relative to the pivots, yes of course, but simply stating that a horizontal shock is inferior to a vertical shock position seems to be the train of thought amongst some.

I know. Had that "discussion" with pro racer a few days ago.

It seems to be, but there is no truth in it. No question. There was debate on the James Reid bike check thread, but it's one guy who has been going around bashing all bikes in favour of the Silverback Sesta. (Which is a great bike, but bashing something just cause you have a favourite is a bit silly)

Jinne okes as with the other thread.. this isn't about the design of the actual bike.. but it's about that awesome paint job.[emoji16]

I like it, not so much the sponsor logo's on the frame though... each to his own I guess... Then again, they are getting him to and kitting him at the Olympics, a whole lot more than our government is doing for the athletes at the Olympics...

***SIGH*** I hope this government will wake up and smell the coffee already... Then again, maybe I should wake up and smell reality...

Good show by all the guys involved and nice shots by Tyson.

Iwan, you were pretty spot on actually. For the most part though I reckon people be supportive.

Best of luck to both of them. What ever the results will be, it must be one hell of an experience just to go to the Ofreakinlympics ! I'm not bashing JR's Spazepic but I would much rather represent my country on a bike looking like Alan's than on one looking the same (depending on temperature) as 10 others on the course. So ja, I'm with you Gen ! It's not about the bike, It's about the paint !

Super proud of the fact that we are represented as a nation in this event. It is a niche event and it takes a massive amount of money to get the athletes there. I am also very proud of the fact that the bike was put together and painted in Durban. Its nickname should be "DurbanPoison" to go with the paint.

As a Giant fanboy, it is also great to see the frame that I ride in the Olympics.

The very modern suspension design will serve him well. It has been proven through science tests.

Apologies if I've been living in a cave and not keeping up to date with the local XCO scene, but who is Alan Hatherly and when did he arrive on the scene? What happened to the likes of Phil Buys, Max Knox and those okes?

To fill you in on some background info.

Alan started of racing downhill in his youth and was up there with the best of them, he then moved over to cross country.

He tends to have the same race ethic that Burry had, go flat out from the start til you blow. Alan has got a super high reving motor, that used to blow spectacularly in the closing km's of a race. Now as with Burry although at an older age Allan's stamina has caught up to match his engine. His DH background also means he is one of the most skilled riders around.
