Are you ready for a Big MTB Year?

By Matt · 91 comments

A mountain bike event like no other. There is no start or finish. No short route or long route. In fact, no set route at all. Just you, your bike and any of the selected trails around SA. Big MTB Year is the brainchild of the team at EcoBound events. The same team behind some of the stalwarts of the mountain biking calendar (‘Trans Baviaans’ and ‘To Hell and Back’, to name just two).

They’ve put together a great video explaining the concept and how it all works. Take a look.

http://vimeo.com/80381041

How does it work?

  • The aim, to see how many top selected trails you can ride in a single year.
  • The awesomeness, you can do it anytime at your leisure.
  • No crowds, no panicky starts, just do it when you want and at your own pace.
  • Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere.
  • Race against yourself, your equally obsessed MTB friends or take it on as a challenge.
  • Whatever turns your wheels.
  • To participate, download The Big Year App for your Apple or Android device and subscribe.
    (From the event website)

What does it cost?

  • The entry fee is just R199.00 which is paid when you download the app
  • Note: This does not include applicable access fees to the selected trails

It’s a unique concept and a fantastic way to promote the multitude of MTB trails around the country. Sure, it will take some time and money to get to each and every selected trail, but if the entry gets you to explore even one new trail in the year we’d consider it worthwhile.

For all the details on the rules, app and points system take a look at the event website: www.bigmtbyear.com/

You can also discuss the event and share your Big MTB Year in the dedicated forums right here on The Hub.

Kudos chap. I love it when people talk sense.

Could even rely on advertising for money?

That too or in app purchases like how many of the successful games do it now, look at Plants vs Zombies 2 for example.. Make entering the competition an in app purchase for those who want to enter it. I would probably enter it under such a model as I would have had a feel for the app and seen that there is a large user community and is actually quite fun.

It's really hard to get people to part with the cash upfront, look at Strava, people laughed at the R50 p/m subscription for pro in the beginning but I know many people which are now pro subscribers after first using the app for a year or so for free.

Sense...this post has alot of it.

I think the uptake would have been huge...pay to unlock certain trails or "secret" sections or even functionality....like with stick cricket / plants vs zombies etc etc. The free version would give you just enough to want more, and then you can go in app purchase route.

100% , in my personal experience I have spent way more on 'in app purchases' vs the old upfront model specifically on games. If the app is addictive people will buy "stuff" once immersed in it.

Some interesting reading here.

I'm not really a bike park type of rider and also don't enjoy riding with my phone.

So the BIG MTB Year is not gonna see me.

I do however like to keep track of where I ride, for how long and how far... But for that my Polar is fulfilling the service.

Where do I start...

R199 for the App. Not true. I was charged in Pounds 11.76. Yes yes, so it came out at R207.xx, which is much more than R199 but it's not the displayed price. Then you here of it costing anywhere from $19.99 to $24.

What is the App like?

Slow! Moving between the trails and provinces is like a test match.

The screens do not load correctly. It must consume vast processing power as my S3 heats up significantly. Battery drops 10% in less than 10 minutes.

In the end I'm disappointed in the product. Poor GUI. Something is very wrong with the code to consume so much battery power and use the processor to such an extent. One good thing is that the developers have realised something is wrong and are supposedly correcting a few things.

I'm using the Android version and wonder if the Apple version is any better?

You’re entering a unique event in an unusual way, that’s all...

Indeed, I love the idea but the way you guys have gone about it is all wrong. The price point is random, cheap if it's good but too expensive just to 'try'. There are prizes?? it's pretty lazy to have gone to all the effort and not have secured an inkling of the prizes.

The money is not the issue, make it freemium (ie. free to try for 30 days, then pay to stay in, or lite version with base maps full version includes ranking.

I'll sign up for that, currently only 10-50 downloads on the play store.

I really like the concept and feel kudos are due to Ecobound for starting something like this, I don't mind paying the R200 for the app, but I won't because I feel it is a big negative that you have to use the app to record your ride and can't just upload from a dedicated GPS, I'm sure there are other ways you could confirm the ride is legitimate. Looking forward to seeing how this grows and improves and who knows maybe 2015 as going to be a bigger mtb year :D

Thats happening already,

First rode it on Sunday, then on Monday, but they had a problem with program, and discovered you needed to take photo before hitting finish, so rode it this morning again, but now realised I have not seen the sign board anywhere, so simply took a photo of the sign board as you enter the MTB parking area.

Good excuse to ride it again.
