2014 Cape Epic Partnerships

By BikeHubCoreAdmin · 142 comments

New and old partnerships will set the pace at this year’s Absa Cape Epic, which takes place from 23 to 30 March. The race will see 1 200 cyclists take on the challenging 718km with 14 850m of climbing, visiting the towns of Robertson, Greyton and Elgin, and finishing eight days later at Lourensford Wine Estate.

Four times Absa Cape Epic winner Christoph Sauser will take on the 2014 challenge with Frantisek Rabon – a former roadie – for the first time. The partnership between Nino Schurter and Philip Buys will also be another new South African/Swiss combination. Mixed category champion Ariane Kleinhans will be riding in the Women’s category for the first time with Annika Langvad. No doubt that all eyes will also be on Karl Platt, another favourite who won the Absa Cape Epic four times, when he partners again with Urs Huber as the old “tried and tested” team.

New Partnership: Christoph Sauser and Frantisek Rabon

Riding as part of team Meerendal-Songo-Specialized, Sauser is arguably the world’s most celebrated mountain bike rider with both marathon and cross-country world titles (apart from being an Olympic medal champion and four times Absa Cape Epic winner title holder). Although 2014’s new partnership with Rabon is untested, the same could be said of him and Czech teammate Jaroslav Kulhavy before they dominated the 2013 event.

Says Sauser: “I’m delighted that I’ve found a very strong partner in Rabon. He has a great character and personality. He’s also committed to win the 2014 Absa Cape Epic. However, many unexpected scenarios can happen, which we’re very aware of.” Rabon adds: “It’s such an honour to ride with Christoph. He’s such a legend and we’ve become really good teammates, so I feel really good about us riding together.”

Nino Schurter and Philip Buys will be competing as team Scott-Odlo Racing. Schurter is a specialist when it comes to short course cross-country races, where races last 90 minutes. As a world champion, there is little doubt that his immense physiology and skill will carry him to an elusive stage win and perhaps a podium spot overall. In turn, local lad Buys demonstrated he is up to this monumental task when he dueled José Hermida and Rudi van Houts to the finish line in Lourensford last year.

New Partnership: Nino Schurter and Philip Buys

Says Schurter: “We’re racing together for the first time and I’m really looking forward to it. Philip has great experience with stage races in the African heat and I’ve got experience in cross-country races. This will make us super strong.” Buys adds: “I feel honoured to ride with the fastest rider on the planet. Although slightly nervous, my excitement overpowers it.”

Mixed category winner Ariane Kleinhans has foregone her partnership with husband Erik to participate this year with Annika Langvad in the Women’s category. Langvad might be seen as a newbie, but the two-time marathon world champion, Danish cross-country and time trial champion, is a good match.

Kleinhans comments: “Annika and I previously participated in a stage race where we won every stage as well as the overall. It was a very good test for our new partnership. We made a really good team both on and off the bike. We’re very motivated to go for the overall win.” Langvad adds: “Even though we’re two very different riders with two completely different histories, somehow everything just fits together.”

Karl Platt and Urs Huber will ride together for the second time as the Bulls. The Swiss/German team proved last year that they never give up fighting.

Tried and Tested: Karl Platt and Urs Huber

Says Platt: “I think we had a very successful partnership last year and we’re looking forward to this year’s event.” Huber adds: “Our second place in the 2013 Absa Cape Epic was a sign that we’re a good team. Our goal is to win, which means we have to be focused and concentrate during the whole week, without making any mistakes.”

@ rouxtjie only reason i would go for epic again is yellow... at 26 reckon in the next 10 years that could happen.. but for know i concentrate on common wealth and olympics.. and let me tell you something.. the depth of youngsters in sa is amazing at xc!! there are so many talented riders and they all fighing very hard!! the likes of rourke croeser, phil buys is amzing.. i got a lot of work to do still to get my xc legs up to them... they dont get the credit they deserve at xc.. marathon gets all publicity.. !! but its a new challenge for me and im loving it!!

Yeah shame hey.. the xc guys really don't get the acknowledgement they should. And xc is hard so hard .. I tried it once.. full taps lap after lap ... eina not for me.

But really really wish all the youngsters all the best, they are super talented.

funniest thing is in the week before the event the weather was wonderful and track so smooth and fast.. friday night that ll changed..

Well nothing changes by me.. I always cheer for the Bulls, Platt comes across like a really awesome guy. . How can one not cheer for him.. and this yr.. pheeewie.. they look so strong.

As for the african jersey. . Not sure.. cant tell

The ladies race may either turn out very exciting or just dominated by Kleinhans and her partner.. they destroyed the field at Pioneer.. but a lot can happen at any time at the epic..

I have noticed the RECM have had a couple of mechanical issues since moving over to Spez. . Not sure if it's just bad luck or perhaps paying the price for all that lightweight equipment.

African jersey is going to be a great contest. My thoughts (and very subjective) -

Lill-Keey :

Pros - Lill in very good shape with even more experience. The team is stronger.

Cons - Not sure where Keey is at compared with last year.

Lill is in great shape and hopefully the stomach bug of last year stay away. Hope Keey is again in good shape, he was very strong last year.

Evans-Max :

Pros - Two of SA's best XCM cyclists. Evans and Knox are tough tough tough!

Cons - Evans may not be as motivated as previously. Max's training was not Epic focused?

Evans is hard as nails and very consistent. He knows what its about. Max is one of our best - just hope he goes in with not too little body fat...

Kleinhans-Bell:

Pros - Very focused and hungry to perform. Good preparation.

Cons - New partners. Consistency over 8 days ?

Where my thoughts are at - Lets see :) These guys are all so so good.

Has the evans and knox partnership been confirmed anywhere. I saw on twitter Neil said he is sad to miss the epic, but has seen no confirmation on the new partnership.

Thanks scotty

Suppose i should have thought about the official site. Interesting partnership. They have sprinted against each other often for race wins. Kevin looks in great shape. If max is in similar shape this will be an epic african jersey contest.

Those guys are exceptional at the moment and pretty consistent, but Kevin and Max both just have something special that many local pros seem to lack at times. So I recon they will be right up there. I doubt Max would sign up for something like this if he was unsure about his form.

I'm willing to bet a beer no wait lets make it a lunch at Gilroys.

Kevin Evans is the strongest local rider and I believe Max will dig deep. Lill & Keey was my first pick but with the Maxevans combo racing I'm changing my pick.

But Max was saying on here a few weeks ago that he is giving The Epic (™) a miss this year. Surely a pro would have a rigid training regime going months before such an event? But all the best to them.

You are on....steak and chips and a gilroys blonde(no not one of the aunty's at another table)

I am going with Lill and Keey then...I like king kev and max but I don't think their form is where the other okes are.

PS being rabubi and suzie backup riders I don't want to go bell / kleinhans purely because they might have to give a wheel somewhere along the line...they would have been my first choice if they werent riding "in support of"
