There\u2019s something extraordinary about the Great Zuurberg Trek<\/a>. It\u2019s not just a race\u2014it\u2019s an adventure that leaves you both exhilarated and feeling strangely at home. As I set off for this year\u2019s event, I knew I was in for a wild ride, but nothing could\u2019ve prepared me for the unique blend of thrill, comfort, and community that awaited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s start with the trails.<\/strong> The GZT team has truly mastered the art of creating trails that appeal to every kind of rider. Whether you\u2019re a seasoned racing snake, an e-bike explorer, or a weekend warrior, the trails here will leave you wanting more. One moment, I was navigating rocky technical climbs that had my heart rate screaming at me; the next, I was flowing through single-track on the ridgeline that let me open up the throttle and soak in the raw beauty of the Addo landscape. And then, of course, there\u2019s Monti\u2019s\u2014a brutal climb that\u2019s become legendary among riders. Conquering it felt like a rite of passage, and at the top, I found myself in the company of strangers who suddenly felt like old mates. We\u2019d only known each other for the best part of 45 minutes, but the shared sense of accomplishment made it feel like we\u2019d been training together for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And let me tell you, there\u2019s something truly magical about waking up at the crack of dawn, slipping into slippers, and wandering over to the coffee truck for a freshly brewed cappuccino. This became our morning ritual\u2014riders huddled together, sharing stories from the night before and swapping excitement for the day\u2019s trails. As someone with a notorious sweet tooth, I was in heaven with the dessert spread every evening (I may have gone back for seconds\u2026 okay, maybe thirds). And just when I thought it couldn\u2019t get any better, I discovered the Free Wheel Bar. Beer, wine, G&T\u2019s\u2014it was all there, and the best part? No need to reach for your wallet. There\u2019s something wonderfully liberating about sharing a drink with fellow riders, knowing it\u2019s all part of the experience. It felt like a mini festival for mountain bikers, where everyone\u2019s invited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And let\u2019s talk about the service.<\/strong> At the end of each day, I\u2019d cross the finish line, hand my dusty or muddy, trail weary bike to the GZT crew, and watch as they whisked it away for a well-deserved pampering session. My trusted steed got a daily manicure and pedicure\u2014cleaned, polished, lubed, and left sparkling like it was straight off the showroom floor. Every morning, it was waiting for me, champing at the bit and ready to go. It\u2019s safe to say my bike probably loved GZT as much as I did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the hardcore \u201cracing snakes\u201d to the e-bike cruisers there to soak up the vibe, everyone was welcomed with open arms. Age, experience, skill level\u2014none of it mattered. What did matter was the shared passion, the camaraderie, and the laughter around the pool after a hard day\u2019s ride. GZT is unpretentious, a bit rough around the edges in the best possible way and filled with people who are there for the right reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were moments that\u2019ll stick with me. The adrenaline rush of the 7 Dwarfs, a 7km downhill that had my heart racing and my fingers nervously feathering the brakes, all while feeling an invisible nudge to go just a little bit faster. The sense of achievement when we hit the top of Zuurberg Pass, and the pure joy of riding in one of the most breathtaking landscapes South Africa has to offer. These aren\u2019t just memories\u2014they\u2019re experiences that connect you to people and places in a way that\u2019s hard to describe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, here I am, back in my office overlooking the Jozi skyline, grinning at random moments, remembering those three incredible days in Addo. The Great Zuurberg Trek isn\u2019t just a race to tick off your bucket list; it\u2019s an experience that reminds you why you fell in love with mountain biking in the first place. It\u2019s about the trails, yes, but also about the people, the stories, and the sense of freedom that only a weekend in the saddle can bring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
