{"id":22385,"date":"2012-03-18T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-03-18T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/anoshina-smith-slip-and-slide-to-world-cup-victory-r109\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T12:41:49","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T12:41:49","slug":"anoshina-smith-slip-and-slide-to-world-cup-victory-r109","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/anoshina-smith-slip-and-slide-to-world-cup-victory-r109\/","title":{"rendered":"Anoshina, Smith Slip and Slide to World Cup Victory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the men\u2019s elite cross-country event finished, the heavens opened over the Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg making the conditions for the women\u2019s under-23 and junior women\u2019s races of the 2012 RockyRoads UCI MTB World Cup which followed exceptionally difficult.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of their races, most of the competitors were barely recognisable beneath the mud that covered them from head to foot, however, Team Protek\u2019s Ekaterina Anoshina flourished in the dire conditions to claim a convincing victory in the under-23 section whilst local rider Hayley Smith claiming the junior women\u2019s title.<\/p>\n<p>Incredibly, the Russian said the conditions played a big part in her success. \u201cI won because of the rain! My technical skill helped me. I am very happy,\u201d said Anoshina.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-28720800-1332068628.jpg\" data-fileid=\"100521\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"100521\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"UCI WC Ekaterina Anoshina.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-28720800-1332068628.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>Under 23 women&#8217;s cross country winner Ekaterina Anoshina at the 2012 RockyRoads UCI MTB World Cup Pietermaritzburg at Cascades MTB Park \u00a9 Darren Goddard (cycho.co.za)\/Gameplan Media<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Second place went to the Ukraine\u2019s Yana Beomoyna of the Bi&amp;esse Infotre Protek team who was followed over the finishing line by Austria\u2019s Lisa Mitterbauer of the BikePark.ch SCOTT team.<\/p>\n<p>Candice Neethling was the leading South African, in 11th place.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-59836300-1332068627.jpg\" data-fileid=\"100520\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"100520\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"UCI WC Candice Neethling.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-59836300-1332068627.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>South Africa&#8217;s Candice Neethling claimed eleventh in the Under 23 women&#8217;s cross-country race at the 2012 RockyRoads UCI MTB World Cup Pietermaritzburg at Cascades MTB Park \u00a9 Darren Goddard (cycho.co.za)\/Gameplan Media<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hayley Smith\u2019s victory in the junior women\u2019s event, which featured an all-South African field, was quite remarkable considering the obstacles she has overcome in the past year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a heart operation last year in April,\u201d she explained. \u201cAnd two weeks after that I broke my collarbone, so then I was out for another six weeks. So I am really happy just to be here and have made a comeback.
