According to Nel stage three was brilliant. “Stage three’s route was fantastic. I’ve participated in the Wines2Whales for the past three years and the route just keeps getting better. Looking at the single track it is clear that the route organizers have put in a lot of work this year. The nice thing about the Wines2Whales Adventure is that you get to have the single track to yourself. I’ll definitely be back next year, but still need to decide whether I’ll be doing the Adventure or the Race,” says Nel. Team Suunto Ambit came in second, while Team Last Minute finished third.

Lisa and Brian Bontekoning of Team The Bonteboks took the top spot in the mixed team category with a combined finishing time of 12hours56minutes17seconds. According to Lisa stage three was fast and fun. “We really enjoyed today’s route, but then we really enjoyed day one and day two’s route as well. Knowing that the second mixed team was just behind us, we were forced to push a little harder today. We really enjoyed ourselves this weekend. The people are great. We’ve done all the big races and the Wines2Whales Adventure definitely ranks as one of our favorites,” says Lisa. Team Mcloughlin came in second, while Team Bullet finished third.

In the women’s race Glynnis Byron and Kim De Villiers of team Smart Tarts claimed their hat-trick stage win, safely securing them the overall champions title with a combined finishing time of 13hours44minutes11seconds.

EVENT SUMMARY

STAGE ONE:

Date: Friday, 02 November 2012

Distance: 69km

Start: Lourensford Wine Estate (Somerset West)

Finish: Oak Valley Sport Field (Elgin)

STAGE TWO:

Date: Saturday, 03 November 2012

Distance: 65km

Start: Oak Valley Sport Field (Elgin)

Finish: Oak Valley Sport Field (Elgin)

STAGE THREE:

Date: Sunday, 04 November 2012

Distance: 75km

Start: Oak Valley Sport Field (Elgin)

Finish: Onrus Caravan Park (just outside Hermanus)

Next weekend (09 – 11 November 2012) it will be the racing snakes’ turn to take on the fast-paced Contego Wines2Whales MTB Race powered by Maserati.

Follow us on Twitter: @w2wmtb

Follow us on Facebook: Contego Wines2Whales

For more information on the Contego Wines2Whales MTB Adventure and Race powered by Maserati e-mail entries@wines2whales.co.za or visit www.wines2whales.co.za

Christian Nel and Karl Kielblock of Team The Unintentionals claimed the title of overall champions in the men’s team category of the 2012 Contego Wines2Whales MTB Adventure powered by Maserati after completing three magnificent days of mountain biking (02 – 04 November 2012) in a combined time of 10hours54minutes20seconds.
