{"id":22111,"date":"2012-12-10T09:55:00","date_gmt":"2012-12-10T09:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2012\/12\/10\/the-herald-vw-cycle-tour39s-addo-single-track-among-the-best-r388\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T12:34:38","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T12:34:38","slug":"the-herald-vw-cycle-tour39s-addo-single-track-among-the-best-r388","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/the-herald-vw-cycle-tour39s-addo-single-track-among-the-best-r388\/","title":{"rendered":"The Herald VW Cycle Tour&#8217;s Addo single track among the \u2018best\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Organisers of the Eastern Cape\u2019s biggest mountain bike event, The Herald VW Cycle Tour, will finally get to roll out their much-anticipated trails at Addo on February 2 after torrential rains rendered the new course unrideable this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pleased to say that the 2012 downpours haven\u2019t put a damper on the enthusiasm for next year\u2019s event,\u201d said race director Brad Jackson of Mountain Events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have gone to great lengths to rain-proof large portions of the existing track by laying down gravel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Jackson, riders in the 80km Extreme and 60km Adventure could look forward to an even better ride next year with several kilometres of new single track currently under construction.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-61714400-1355134920.jpg\" data-fileid=\"168064\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"168064\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"Roger Pheiffer 2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-61714400-1355134920.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>Local mountain biker Roger Pheiffer in full flight as he prepares for the 80km Extreme at The Herald VW Cycle Tour on February 2. Photo: Coetzee Gouws\/Full Stop Communications<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo other race in the province has as much dedicated single track.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said sections of the new trails had been \u201croad-tested\u201d during the Cross Country and Downhill National Cup in July.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFeedback from some pro riders was that the tracks are some of the best in the country, with a few even rating them better than the World Cup courses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackson said one new section in particular, built by Rob and Trevor Hayter of Hayterdale Trails, consisted of a stretch of contour path on the side of a very steep slope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s probably one of the best pieces of single track I have ever seen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said riders could also look forward to the multiple purpose-built bridges, which will see riders pedalling above and below each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 80km is labelled \u2018Extreme\u2019 for a reason, with a total elevation of 1 400 metres and some of the most exciting single-track riding available.
