{"id":22107,"date":"2012-12-11T13:25:00","date_gmt":"2012-12-11T13:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2012\/12\/11\/berge-en-dale-named-argus-seeding-race-r392\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T12:34:32","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T12:34:32","slug":"berge-en-dale-named-argus-seeding-race-r392","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/berge-en-dale-named-argus-seeding-race-r392\/","title":{"rendered":"Berge en Dale named Argus seeding race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The West Rand\u2019s largest cycle race, the Optimum Berge en Dale Classic, has been named as the newest seeding event for the 2014 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour.<\/p>\n<p>The 97km event, which is presented by ASG Events, rolls out from Silverstar Casino in Muldersdrift on February 9. \u201cIt\u2019s perfectly placed on the calendar as it gives riders a full month to recover for the Cycle Tour,\u201d said race organiser Wynand de Villiers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really chuffed to have been awarded this honour. It\u2019s taken many years of hard work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>De Villiers, who has run the event for the past four years, said it was an especially proud moment for race founder Wouter van Wyk, who started it as a fundraiser for his Weltevreden Hervormde Kerk congregation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe race has grown from 1 100 to 2 500 riders since we took it over. We naturally expect many more participants now that it is officially a seeding event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With four big climbs en route, the 14<sup>th<\/sup> edition of the Berge en Dale certainly lived up to its name and would be a fantastic fitness barometer, said De Villiers.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-96257500-1355232960.jpg\" data-fileid=\"168543\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"168543\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-96257500-1355232960.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>MTN-Qhubeka\u2019s victory at this year\u2019s Optimum Berge en Dale Classic launched a successful international campaign. Of all the big races leading up to the tour, I believe it\u2019s the closest in terms of difficulty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>De Villiers said the route began with the well-known Hillsnacks ascent, which used to be a category four climb in the Rapport Tour. \u201cIt\u2019s a six-kilometre monster with a seven per cent gradient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe final climb back to the R28 doesn\u2019t have a name, but it\u2019s a backbreaker with just 10 kilometres to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And just when they thought the worst was over, he said riders encountered the sting in the tail. \u201cThe short uphill drag along the highway to the finish is pure torture after 97 kilometres of hard riding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But those were the only perils to worry about, said De Villiers. \u201cThe surface is good throughout and the roads are nice and quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get a lot of assistance from Mogale City traffic officers and the race therefore has a reputation for being one of the safest in Gauteng.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s event was won by MTN-Qhubeka\u2019s Reinardt Janse van Rensburg, who went on to a superb international season that included victory in the Cycle Tour.
