{"id":22093,"date":"2013-01-14T14:40:00","date_gmt":"2013-01-14T14:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2013\/01\/14\/the-herald-vw-cycle-tour-adds-new-endurance-race-for-kids-r406\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T12:34:13","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T12:34:13","slug":"the-herald-vw-cycle-tour-adds-new-endurance-race-for-kids-r406","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/the-herald-vw-cycle-tour-adds-new-endurance-race-for-kids-r406\/","title":{"rendered":"The Herald VW Cycle Tour adds new endurance race for kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Due to the demand from budding cyclists, The Herald VW Cycle Tour has introduced an \u201cendurance\u201d challenge for children called the Powerade 10km Sprint.<\/p>\n<p>Aimed at the 10 to 12 year age group, the latest addition to the Powerade-sponsored family road events effectively bridges the gap between the 21km Leisure Ride on the one side and the 2km Kiddies\u2019 Ride and 500m Toddlers\u2019 Dash on the other.<\/p>\n<p>According to event coordinator Linda Harwood, the new race fulfilled the organisers\u2019 vision to offer a complete weekend festival of cycling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike the Leisure Ride, it\u2019s an ideal opportunity for parents to interact with their kids because participants have to be accompanied by an adult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For older teens, Harwood said the new 55km Pursuit \u2013 which replaces the existing 40km and 70km races \u2013 would include licensed U14 and U16 racing categories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow there really is something for everyone leading up to the 106km Classic feature race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the mountain bike side, she said Powerade would once again sponsor the 30km Leisure Challenge, 5km Kiddies\u2019 Challenge and 500m Toddlers\u2019 Dash.<\/p>\n<p>She said the cycle tour \u2013 which takes place in Port Elizabeth and Addo \u2013 epitomised Nelson Mandela Bay\u2019s healthy, family-oriented, outdoor lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-91769300-1358175105.jpg\" data-fileid=\"176204\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"176204\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"Reach 2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-91769300-1358175105.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>Powerade special events manager Danny Williams (left) and Reach for a Dream recipient Vuvu, 15, give her brother Andile, 5, a push start in preparation for The Herald VW Cycle Tour. Photo: Coetzee Gouws\/fullstop<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Powerade\u2019s special events manager Danny Williams said it was these values that resonated strongly with the sports drink brand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur brand is very much about family togetherness and living a healthy, active lifestyle. We love the fact that the new event has kids riding with their moms and dads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Williams said the 10km race was a welcome addition to the line-up and that Powerade had been a proud sponsor of the road and mountain bike family events since their inception.<\/p>\n<p>He said the sponsorship would once again include a financial contribution, liquid refreshment for participants and novelty items for the goodie bags. \u201cOur two Gig Rigs (mobile music trucks) will also add to the festive atmosphere over the weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the sponsorship aspect, Williams said the tour was important from a corporate social responsibility perspective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very happy about Reach for a Dream\u2019s involvement and that they benefit directly from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Proceeds from the family road races go to the non-profit organisation, which makes the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses come true.<\/p>\n<p>One such recipient is 15-year-old cancer survivor Vuvu, who was diagnosed with aplastic anaemia last year and received a life-saving bone marrow transplant from her five-year-old brother Andile.<\/p>\n<p>Vuvu\u2019s wish for a scrapbooking kit was fulfilled last October and kept her busy during her four-month stay at the Red Cross Children\u2019s Hospital in Cape Town.<\/p>\n<p>Now in remission, the Victoria Park High School pupil described her little brother as \u201cvery brave and joyful\u201d and said the operation had strengthened their already close bond.<\/p>\n<p>She said she would be there to cheer Andile on when he takes part in the Toddlers\u2019 Dash at Hobie Beach in PE on Saturday, February 2.<\/p>\n<p>All the family road and mountain bike events take place on the Saturday, while the 55km Pursuit and 106km Classic round off the weekend on the Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Enter at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldcycletour.co.za\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">www.heraldcycletour.co.za<\/a> before January 21.<\/p>\n<p>For updates, follow @heraldcycletour or like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheHeraldCycleTour\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">www.facebook.com\/TheHeraldCycleTour<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Due to the demand from budding cyclists, The Herald VW Cycle Tour has introduced an \u201cendurance\u201d challenge for children called the Powerade 10km Sprint.
