{"id":22022,"date":"2013-02-25T06:25:00","date_gmt":"2013-02-25T06:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2013\/02\/25\/international-combo-triumphs-in-rocky-mountain-garden-route-300-r482\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T12:33:21","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T12:33:21","slug":"international-combo-triumphs-in-rocky-mountain-garden-route-300-r482","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/international-combo-triumphs-in-rocky-mountain-garden-route-300-r482\/","title":{"rendered":"International combo triumphs in Rocky Mountain Garden Route 300"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Renay Groustra of South Africa and Daniel Gathof of Germany won the third and final stage of the Rocky Mountain Garden Route 300 mountain bike race in Knysna on Sunday to secure a comfortable overall victory.<\/p>\n<p>The Rocky Mountain-RSA Web team\u2019s time of 3:10:11 over the final 80km was two seconds faster than that of stage-one winners Timo Cooper and Adriaan Louw (Bridge), who had relinquished their overall lead the previous day.<\/p>\n<p>Billy Stelling and Rob Dormehl (V&amp;A Market on the Wharf) finished third on the day in 3:15:17.<\/p>\n<p>Groustra and Gathof completed the third edition of the 300km race in an aggregate time of 12:18:59.<\/p>\n<p><em>South African Renay Groustra (left) congratulates German partner Daniel Gathof after winning the three-day Rocky Mountain Garden Route 300 mountain bike race which finished in Knysna on Sunday. Photo: Coetzee Gouws\/fullstop<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cooper and Louw, with an overall time of 12:27:46, were more than eight minutes behind after mechanical trouble had effectively sealed their fate on the second stage.<\/p>\n<p>Neil Bradford and Tim Osrin (Harvest Foundation) rounded out the podium in 12:55:43.<\/p>\n<p>Groustra said the win was particularly meaningful as it was his first outing with Gathof, who is a two-time TransAlp winner in the mixed category. \u201cOur sponsors are also title sponsors of this race, so it means a lot to them and us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said they now hoped to secure funding to ride the Absa Cape Epic together.<\/p>\n<p>Their lead of close to nine minutes going into the final day had put the pressure firmly on Cooper and Louw.<\/p>\n<p>The latter rose to the challenge and turned up the heat within the first 10km on Phantom Pass, but Groustra and Gathof were able to match them all the way to the summit.<\/p>\n<p>The two teams stayed together until Louw initiated a breakaway on the big Hydro climb 30km into the race. \u201cWe were climbing out of the valley after the first waterpoint when Adriaan went hard off the front,\u201d said Groustra.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper and Louw opened up a 40-second gap on the climb but a patient Groustra and Gathof reeled them in shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then it was easy after that because they knew they couldn\u2019t get away from us and we felt we didn\u2019t need to open up a bigger lead,\u201d said Groustra.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper, the inaugural winner and now twice a runner-up, said he was delighted with his third podium at the event. \u201cKnysna\u2019s always been good to me, so I\u2019m very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>A delighted Ischen Stopforth (left) and Yolande de Villiers after winning the women\u2019s category of the three-day Rocky Mountain Garden Route 300 which finished in Knysna on Sunday. Photo: Coetzee Gouws\/fullstop<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s race, an under-the-weather Ischen Stopforth and on-form partner Yolande de Villiers relied on their first two stage wins to secure overall victory in 14:04:35.<\/p>\n<p>Cathering Williamson and Nicci Grobler (bizhub) claimed second overall in 14:25:12, with Janine King and Jackie Moore (Salomon) third in 15:26:47.<\/p>\n<p>Final day honours went to Williamson and Grobler in 3:31:26, with Stopforth and De Villiers second in 3:31:26. King and Moore placed a distant third in 3:50:22.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started feeling better in the second half of the race,\u201d said Stopforth. \u201cBut we knew we had a good lead on the bizhub girls, so we just took it steady.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hannele Steyn and Charl du Plessis (Howard &amp; Chamberlain) were unchallenged in the mixed category.<\/p>\n<p>They took the fast and furious final stage in 3:36:50. They were followed by Lindi Dorfling and Graeme van der Nest (Merrell) in 3:50:09 and Tanja and Jon Oosthuyse (Totally Stoked) in 4:03:48.<\/p>\n<p>The teams occupied the same positions on the general classification.<\/p>\n<p>Steyn and Du Plessis dedicated their win, which came in 14:44:32, to Du Plessis\u2019 father, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Knysna-based Steyn, who is aiming to become the first woman to finish 10 Cape Epics this year, said it was always great to win in her hometown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis race was very much an important part of my final preparation for my 10th Epic. It\u2019s such a privilege to be doing it and it was very important to stay safe out there as so much training has gone into it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong>RESULTS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Men: 1.
