{"id":21712,"date":"2013-07-10T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-07-10T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2013\/07\/10\/meticulous-planning-for-downhill-world-champ-minnaar-r796\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T12:27:52","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T12:27:52","slug":"meticulous-planning-for-downhill-world-champ-minnaar-r796","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/meticulous-planning-for-downhill-world-champ-minnaar-r796\/","title":{"rendered":"Meticulous planning for downhill world champ Minnaar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Defending mountainbike downhill world champion Greg Minnaar has started the 2013 international season that will ultimately lead to the world championships in his hometown, eager to test his new equipment, avoid pressure and gradually build to his title defence at the Cascades MTB Park in August.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-94887600-1373439627.jpg\" data-fileid=\"240149\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"240149\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"GregMinnaar2013DH.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-94887600-1373439627.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>\u201cWe want to make sure where we are for the next couple of World Cups before we head to World Championship. My trainer Stephane Girrard knows me well, and we will enter the World Champs in the right condition.\u201d says Greg Minnaar ahead of the UCI MTB Masters World Championships which take place at Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg from 21-25 August.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><span style=\"color:#696969\"><strong>Photo: Kathy Sessler\/Gameplan Media<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>After a disappointing opening round of the UCI World Cup series, he returned to better form for the second round before heading to Val d\u2019Allos where he made the podium in the enduro World Series race, and grabbed a stage win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel more on track now,\u201d said Minnaar. \u201cThe season started a little too steady for my liking. Round two of the World Cup went a lot better for me. Then we went to Val d&#8217; Allos where I finished third overall and got my first stage win&#8230;. I was pretty stoked with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While enduro races may seem something of a diversion for the downhill supremo, they have provided a release and an opportunity to work on his rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnduro is something I\u2019ve always liked and now that they have formed a world series it makes sense for me to ride,\u201d said Minnaar.<\/p>\n<p>Minnaar and his Santa Cruz Syndicate team have also finished another round of equipment testing before the resumption of the World Cup circuit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve just finished a week of testing in the South of France,\u201d said Minnaar. \u201cWe want to make sure where we are for the next couple of World Cups before we head to World Championship. My trainer Stephane Girrard knows me well, and we will enter the World Champs in the right condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Minnaar has a firm plan in place for the lead up to the World Champs at the Cascades downhill course that he knows well. He is however a believer in not overtraining on the course so that he can stay fresh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know the area well as I have grown up and live not far from the Cascades,\u201d said Minnaar. \u201cWe have enough practice time during the event to test out what ever changes have been made to the track.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-99921500-1373439628.jpg\" data-fileid=\"240150\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"240150\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"GregMinnaar2013Jump.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-99921500-1373439628.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>Greg Minnaar in action in the Val d&#8217;Allos enduro ahead of the UCI MTB Masters World Championships which take place at Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg from 21-25 August.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><span style=\"color:#696969\"><strong>Photo: Kathy Sessler\/Gameplan Media<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s tough leading in to this event, there is so much pressure and everyone wants a piece of you, \u201c he added. \u201cIn previous years I\u2019ve actually left town for the weeks leading in to the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ll definitely be laying low again. I will be home a couple weeks prior to World Champs so I&#8217;ll be able to have a look at the changes to the course then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Minnaar dealing with the pressure is a critical element of managing his own goals and meeting the massive weight of public expectation on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the pressure I\u2019m going to have to deal with!\u201d he laughs. \u201cIt\u2019s OK, I know how to race under pressure, the only option I have is to ride off the pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships takes place at Cascades MTB park in Pietermaritzburg from 26 August to 1 September 2013, and will be preceded by the UCI MTB Masters World Championships from21 to 25 August.
