{"id":21624,"date":"2013-08-23T15:25:00","date_gmt":"2013-08-23T14:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2013\/08\/23\/gold-rush-for-sa-cross-country-men-at-masters-r885\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T12:25:25","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T12:25:25","slug":"gold-rush-for-sa-cross-country-men-at-masters-r885","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/gold-rush-for-sa-cross-country-men-at-masters-r885\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold rush for SA Cross Country men at Masters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After the local women dominated proceedings earlier in the day it was the turn of the oldest three categories of the men\u2019s cross country competition to take to the Cascades MTB Park course in Pietermaritzburg on the opening day of competition of the UCI MTB Masters World Championships and it was another successful showing by the South Africans who claimed two of the three World Cup jerseys on offer.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-40746100-1377271743.jpg\" data-fileid=\"258056\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"258056\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"2013M3PaulFurbankWins.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-40746100-1377271743.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>Paul Furbank (South Africa) claims victory in the men&#8217;s 55-59 cross country event at the UCI MTB Masters World Championships 2013 at Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em><strong>Photo: Darren Goddard\/Gameplan Media<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The riders may have been at the furthest end of the age scale but the competition was brutal and in the men\u2019s 55-59 year old category Paul Furbank snuck in ahead of Swede and defending champ Benny Andersson to take the rainbow jersey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was pretty nervous before the start of the event but I am so glad that I came through with the win,\u201d Furbank mentioned. \u201cThere was some serious competition out there and I had to be on top of my game in order to win it on such a fantastic course!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There were a few changes in the lead in the opening stages of the clash with the Swede putting Furbank under a lot of pressure the whole way through the race and a piece of brave decision-making by Furbank required for him to eventually break the shackles and take the decisive lead that he then never relinquished for the rest of the encounter.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-32714900-1377271742.jpg\" data-fileid=\"258055\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"258055\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"2013M3PaulFurbankAction.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-32714900-1377271742.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>Paul Furbank of South Africa en route to victory in the men&#8217;s 55-59 cross country event at the UCI MTB Masters World Championships 2013 at Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>Photo: Darren Goddard\/Gameplan Media<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI attacked early but Benny (Andersson) took over quite early and it took an A-line from me to go past him and then I made sure that I stayed in front.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was always putting me under pressure and whenever I looked over my shoulder I could see him there which made me go a little faster,\u201d the Johannesburg rider mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>The second World Championship crown for the host nation came after Linus van Onselen claimed the title in the men\u2019s 60-64 category ahead of Venezuelan Pedro Trujillo.
