{"id":21603,"date":"2013-08-31T12:35:00","date_gmt":"2013-08-31T11:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2013\/08\/31\/smith-and-atherton-gain-psychological-advantage-ahead-of-downhill-shootout-r906\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T12:24:19","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T12:24:19","slug":"smith-and-atherton-gain-psychological-advantage-ahead-of-downhill-shootout-r906","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/smith-and-atherton-gain-psychological-advantage-ahead-of-downhill-shootout-r906\/","title":{"rendered":"Smith and Atherton gain psychological advantage ahead of downhill shootout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the globe\u2019s mountain biking community eagerly counting down the hours to the start of Sunday\u2019s men\u2019s and women\u2019s downhill events of the 2013 UCI MTB &amp; Trials World Championships, Saturday morning saw Canadian Steve Smith and Rachel Atherton of Great Britain post the fastest times of the official timed runs in the men\u2019s and women\u2019s categories respectively.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-10589500-1377952656.jpg\" data-fileid=\"260914\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"260914\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"2013E6SteveSmith.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-10589500-1377952656.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>Steve Smith of Canada set the early standard as he went fastest in the downhill official timed runs at the UCI MTB and Trials World Championships 2013 at Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>Photo: Darren Goddard\/Gameplan Media<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Smith\u2019s 4.03.021 run proving his blistering form of late has far from deserted him and he will almost certainly be one of a handful of riders to consider themselves serious title contenders ahead of Sunday\u2019s action.<\/p>\n<p>Despite smith going fastest, the vast majority of the interest around the timed session was around local Pietermaritzburg boy and defending World Champion Greg Minnaar who, after a relaxed middle section, posted the third fifth time, giving him good confidence before the real showdown takes place on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just wanted to try get a feel of how the top section feels because obviously I need to be as quick as possible, particularly at the top. I took it easy for most of the rest of the way down and then gave it a bit of a spurt towards the end again,\u201d explained Minnaar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt obviously wasn\u2019t a full run but it was good race practice before tomorrow,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-90983000-1377952662.jpg\" data-fileid=\"260917\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"260917\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"2013E6GregMinnaar.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-90983000-1377952662.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>Defending World Champion and local PMB boy Greg Minnaar had a solid downhill official timed run at the UCI MTB and Trials World Championships 2013 at Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>Photo: Darren Goddard\/Gameplan Media<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Audio Interview with Greg Minnaar<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/thehubsa\/greg-minnaar-interview\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/thehubsa\/greg-minnaar-interview<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite the timed run not counting towards riders\u2019 seeding, start order \u2013 or anything else for that matter \u2013 starting one\u2019s run is compulsory in order to qualify to take part in the final.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe timed run definitely isn\u2019t a priority for many of the guys so you really can\u2019t read too much into things and it probably means even less here in Maritzburg than it does elsewhere because the course is so physically demanding and so most of the guys would be looking to keep themselves for tomorrow\u2019s race \u2013 when it all counts,\u201d explained the man widely regarded by many as \u2018the voice of downhill\u2019 \u2013 Rob Warner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving said that though, it does give you a few clues and it is great to see Michael Ropelato up in second considering he\u2019s running 29 inch wheels!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whilst the likes of top men\u2019s stars Aaron Gwin (USA), Samuel Hill (AUS) and Brook MacDonald (NZL) all holding their cards very close to their chests and posting the slowest, second slowest and fifth slowest times respectively, there was far less mystery in the women\u2019s session as almost all of the pre-race favourites put in respectable runs.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-64450700-1377952658.jpg\" data-fileid=\"260915\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"260915\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"2013E6RachelAtherton.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-64450700-1377952658.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>Rachel Atherton comes to terms with a course she is unfamiliar with in the downhill official timed runs at the UCI MTB and Trials World Championships 2013 at Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>Photo: Darren Goddard\/Gameplan Media<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>World number one and 2013 UCI MTB World Cup top performer, Rachel Atherton of Great Britain, took full advantage of the opportunity to get to grips with the course she will compete on for the first time ever comeSunday whilst Aussie\u2019s Tracey Hannah and Caroline Buchanan and France\u2019s Morgane Charre all threw their name into the mix as well.<\/p>\n<p>The French duo of Emmeline Ragot and Fionn Griffiths created a slight element of mystery when they opted not to complete their run however the majority of the pre-race curiosity continues to revolve around Buchanan as the looks to claim title number two of the three she will contest in the space of just two months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing downhill and four cross before Olympics was quite a big challenge for me but that did mean that after Olympics it wasn\u2019t all new to me,\u201d explained a clam and upbeat Buchanan. \u201cIt\u2019s been quite a challenge training for all three because the training is all different and use different energy systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a bit of a strange year for me. Going after three titles in just two months has been pretty hectic. I went into BMX Worlds really relaxed and ended up winning there so I\u2019ve tried to bring a similar sort of approach with me to this one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s run also helped me quite a bit, I feel a bit more confident after the run. I\u2019m obviously coming in a bit blind compared to a lot of the others so I\u2019m not too sure what to read from everyone else\u2019s times so I\u2019m just looking to focus on my build-up because anything can happen on the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComing into it I was a little nervous because in BMX you\u2019re in control a lot more whereas you\u2019re always on the edge in downhill so tomorrow I\u2019ve really got to focus on trying to just let go as much as I can and not hold back,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the intrigue surrounding Buchanan it is Atherton who has been labeled by many as the pre-race favourite, despite having never competed at Cascades previously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s good to see Rach (Atherton) on top from the point of view that she\u2019s had to learn the course, get all the jumps down, etc. but, again, tomorrow is when it all counts!\u201d explained Warner.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s event kicks Sunday\u2019s downhill action off at 14h00 with the exhilarating men\u2019s clash kicking off at 15h00.<\/p>\n<p>The UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships takes place at Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg from 26 August to 1 September 2013.
