{"id":21591,"date":"2013-09-04T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-09-04T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2013\/09\/04\/pietermaritzburg-scoops-another-cycling-milestone-r918\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T12:23:53","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T12:23:53","slug":"pietermaritzburg-scoops-another-cycling-milestone-r918","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/pietermaritzburg-scoops-another-cycling-milestone-r918\/","title":{"rendered":"Pietermaritzburg scoops another cycling milestone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the wake of the successful hosting of the 2013 UCI MTB and Trials World Championships, Pietermaritzburg\u2019s reputation as the \u201cBike City\u201d of the African continent has been entrenched by the awarding of the rights to host 2015 Confederation of Cycling Forum.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-51753100-1378303429.jpg\" data-fileid=\"262400\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"262400\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"cac.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-51753100-1378303429.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>Ratifying the awarding of the hosting rights of the Confederation of African Cycling Forum in 2014 to Pietermaritzburg are (from left) event director Alec Lenferna, UCI President Pat McQuaid, CAC president Dr Mohamed Wagih Azzam, and Dr Clive Coetzee General Manager: Infrastructure Management and Economic Services, KwaZulu-Natal Treasury.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#696969\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><strong>Photo: Darren Goddard\/Gameplan Media<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The CAC Forum will bring together all cycling leaders and role players of the African Continent with a series of meetings, conventions and plenary sessions taking place in order to aid in the development of the sport in the years ahead. <\/p>\n<p>CAC President Dr. Mohamed Wagih Azzam, who is also a UCI Board member, said the CAC Forum was critical to prioritising the strategies to support and uplift African cycling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfrican is proud to have hosted the 2013 UCI MTB and Trials World Championships, and it is equally important that we use these high profile events to keep focus on developing all cycling disciplines in every country on the African continent\u201d said Azzam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHosting events to world class standards is one part of the strategic plan to nurture cycling in Africa, and the first CAC Forum will be a vital opportunity for all stake holders to enter into debate on how best to realise our objectives,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The 2015 CAC Forum will be the forerunner for a much larger of the version that Pietermaritzburg is bidding for, the 2016 UCI World Cycling Forum. <\/p>\n<p>The annual meeting of global cycling stakeholders, including international federations, officials, discipline commissions, media and commercial partners includes numerous workshops and exhibitions, trade expos and workshops debating the strategic direction for the sport, and will attract more than 1500 delegates to the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg.<\/p>\n<p>UCI Commercial and Events Director Gerrit Middag completed an assessment of the City\u2019s readiness to host the event during the fortnight long masters and Elite World Championships, and gave the plans an unqualified thumbs up.<\/p>\n<p>The Swiss city of Lausanne will host the World Cycling Forum in 2014, with Monaco hosting the 2015 event.<\/p>\n<p>More information can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtbworldchamps.co.za\/\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">www.mtbworldchamps.co.za<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the wake of the successful hosting of the 2013 UCI MTB and Trials World Championships, Pietermaritzburg\u2019s reputation as the \u201cBike City\u201d of the African continent has been entrenched by the awarding of the rights to host 2015 Confederation of Cycling Forum.
