The women’s and men’s titles were both down to one race, the last leg of the DHI World Cup in Leogang, Austria.<\/p>\n

It was a nail-biting sort of weekend as the DHI titles were being slug out. Rachel Atherton vs Emmeline Ragot; Stevie Smith vs Gee Atherton. The results are in, the winners named and the spoils taken. What’s left now is the winter training for next year’s battles.<\/p>\n

The women were first out on the course. Ironically, it rained all week up to the final runs, and the weekend brought some sunshine to dry the course off. Basically the exact opposite of the previous weekend’s race in Norway. So practices and qualifying conditions were quite different runs to the actual race day, which certainly kept competitors on their toes.<\/p>\n

During qualifying, Rachel took the top spot, with Emmeline just behind. During the race runs, however, Ragot set a blistering time, a full 4.8 seconds faster than Manon Carpenter who took third. Rachel had her work cut out for her. But instead of attacking the course full on, she took a relatively chilled run. I say relatively, because she was only half a second behind Ragot. Afterwards, Rachel stated that she wasn’t too upset about second place, because it gives her motivation for training during winter. Perhaps it’s also because she easily took the overall win for the year. Either way, it makes you think: maybe she dragged her brakes a little? What do you think?<\/p>\n

Now with the men’s race, and this was where all the focus was. The battle for the top place between Smith and Atherton was as tight as any, with only 17 points between them before qualifying. Smith, in an amazing show of consistency, took the qualifying and the overall lead coming into the final race. Perhaps a little disappointingly, Gee only managed to pull a 4th place run out of his bag of tricks, while Smith showed that he really does have what it takes to be the fastest in the sport, taking the lead and the overall title for 2013.<\/p>\n
