But the rain made the stage particularly challenging, with most riders experiencing total brake pad wear before the second water point, halfway into the stage.<\/p>\n<p>Buys and Beukes, winners of the prologue and Stage 4, attacked from the start of the stage in an ambitious effort to reclaim the overall lead they held on Day 1. They built up a 4:50 lead by halfway, but Beukes \u2018s brake pads wore completely through, forcing him to dismount and run down all the steep descents. Defending champions, Klein Karoo Chicks\u2019 Yolande Speedy (RSA) and Yolande de Villiers (RSA) achieved their best finish of the 2013 edition with second place, moving them from fourth to third overall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sounds strange, but Phil and I really enjoyed this stage,\u201d smiled a drenched, muddy Beukes. \u201cWe decided yesterday, after a couple of bad stages, to see if we can still win this race so needed to attack early on. It paid off and we\u2019re now up to second. I had to hold onto Phil\u2019s arm to slow down on some descents and had to run down the steep downhills. Luckily we managed to still stay ahead and win the stage,\u201d added Beukes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been riding very conservatively to lower our risk of a crash or a bike problem. In mountain biking nothing is certain,\u201d said Ariane Kleinhans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have also tried to stay near the front at the start of each stage. The further back you ride in the bunch, the more chance you have of crashing if someone ahead of you goes down. At first it was about getting the overall lead, but now it\u2019s about managing risk,\u201d added Kleinhans.<\/p>\n<p>In the Mixed category there was another leadership change with Cube Nutswerk MTB\u2019s Birgit Lavrijssen (NED) and Marco Minnaard (NED) reclaiming the top spot by winning the stage and displacing overnight leaders, Asrin Cycling 3\u2019s Jennie Stenerhag (SWE) and Craig Gerber (RSA), who now trail the Dutch team by 2:26.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-99719400-1382736758.jpg\" data-fileid=\"281171\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"281171\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"BridgeCPT2013St5mixedwinnerslrweb.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-99719400-1382736758.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Cube Nutswerk MTB&#8217;s Birgit Lavrijssen (left) and Marco Minnaard celebrate winning the Mixed category on Stage 5 of the Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Photo credit Zoon Cronje\/Nikon<\/p>\n<p>Klein Karoo Vets\u2019 Wynand Mulder and Gerrie Beukes claimed the stage win in the Veteran category, but failed to make any real impact on the overall lead of Cube Nutswerk 2\u2019s Micha de Vries (NED) and Rik van den Hanenburg (NED), who were third on Friday\u2019s soggy stage.<\/p>\n<p>The Masters race on Friday saw the category\u2019s closest finish of the race with Wilde 3\u2019s Izak Visagie and Lieb Loots securing the victory by just 36 seconds from Bridge Masters 1\u2019s Con Malherbe (RSA) and Greg Anderson (RSA). Wilde 3 still have a significant overall lead going into Saturday\u2019s final stage.<\/p>\n<p>In the Solo men\u2019s category, Darren Lill (RSA) secured the stage win, but third-placed Adriaan Louw (RSA) retained his overall lead;
