{"id":21257,"date":"2014-03-15T11:50:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-15T11:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2014\/03\/15\/strauss-continues-womens-xco-domination-haw-excels-in-junior-race-r1276\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T12:10:51","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T12:10:51","slug":"strauss-continues-womens-xco-domination-haw-excels-in-junior-race-r1276","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/strauss-continues-womens-xco-domination-haw-excels-in-junior-race-r1276\/","title":{"rendered":"Strauss continues women\u2019s XCO domination, Haw excels in Junior race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mariske Strauss (Orange Monkey Pro Team) and Bianca Haw (BMC-SA) excelled in their races at the opening round of the Southern African MTB Cup Series, which took place at Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, today.<\/p>\n<p>After a week of rain and dismal conditions, riders were greeted with very hot and humid weather.<\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width:400px;\">\n<a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-66456800-1394891585.jpg\" data-fileid=\"334594\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"334594\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-2-0-66456800-1394891585.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-66456800-1394891585.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Mariske Strauss (Orange Monkey Pro Team)<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Strauss led the Elite women\u2019s race from the get-go, winning the 4 laps of the 4.8km course in a time of 01:24:32. Hayley Smith (Bell) finished second, in 01:32:16 with Kim Westbrook claiming third place in 01:38:29. VeloLife\u2019s Ashleigh Moffatt suffered two technicals when she punctured, and had to run across the finish line after the plug popped out of her tyre on the rock garden.<\/p>\n<p>Crossing between long distance training for the Absa Cape Epic and short course training for the cross-country (XCO) races Strauss\u2019 year has been a busy one already, not to mention her Varsity studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything has been going smoothly,\u201d said Strauss. \u201cThanks to Jeroen (Swart) and Science 2 Sport, we\u2019re getting the balance right and all the data is looking good. It\u2019s definitely a bit of a change training for \u2019Epic and trying to fit everything in. At the moment I\u2019m feeling good but the season is long and I am taking it one race at a time. Cascades is always technical, but it\u2019s an awesome course. It was good training for next month\u2019s World Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width:400px;\">\n<a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-74807500-1394891583.jpg\" data-fileid=\"334593\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"334593\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-2-0-74807500-1394891583.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-74807500-1394891583.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Bianca Haw (BMC-SA)<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Haw, the current National Junior Road Race Champion, displayed her true cycling talent in the Junior women\u2019s race. \u201cIt was very hot. I started off fast and it got really hard on the second and third laps. I did all the technical stuff, which was nice.
