{"id":21096,"date":"2014-06-02T08:35:00","date_gmt":"2014-06-02T07:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2014\/06\/02\/louw-and-hill-trek-to-victory-at-zuurberg-r1440\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T12:02:25","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T12:02:25","slug":"louw-and-hill-trek-to-victory-at-zuurberg-r1440","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/louw-and-hill-trek-to-victory-at-zuurberg-r1440\/","title":{"rendered":"Louw and Hill trek to victory at Zuurberg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Andrew Hill and Adriaan Louw were in confident form ahead of next week\u2019s national marathon championships as they cruised to victory in the three-day PwC Great Zuurberg Trek in the Addo area near Port Elizabeth on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-41808-0-65252000-1401698012.jpg\" data-fileid=\"365210\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"365210\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-41808-0-65252000-1401698012.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-41808-0-65252000-1401698012.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Fairview-TIB\u2019s Andrew Hill (left) and Adriaan Louw celebrate their victory in the three-day PwC Great Zuurberg Trek mountain bike race \/\/ Image credit: Full Stop Commynications<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hill and Louw, riding in the colours of Fairview-TIB, crossed the finish line at the Zuurberg Mountain Village in a time of 3:01:56 to take their third consecutive stage win and the overall title in 10:01:28.<\/p>\n<p>Former roadies Andrew Mclean and Bruce Diesel of Cycle Lab-PwC powered up the Zuurberg Pass to finish second on the day in 3:06:43 and in the same position on the general classification in 10:37:30.<\/p>\n<p>There was disappointment for Eastern Cape duo Grant Mac Geoghan and Jason Reed, who had held the runner-up spot overnight. Reed slashed his tyre on a rocky section within the first 5km, effectively ending the race for the Cyclo Pro-Car Spares team.<\/p>\n<p>Siyaya teammates Jade Muller and Francois De Villiers rounded out the stage and overall podium in 3:19:08 for an aggregate time of 11:10:12.<\/p>\n<p>According to Louw, the three solid days of racing had bolstered his and Hill\u2019s preparations ahead of the national and world champs in Pietermaritzburg later this month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the confidence comes from a good block of training, not so much winning the race. It\u2019s a big block that sets you up for what lies ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hill said the 215km route had presented three diversely challenging days on the bike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is different riding \u2013 just exciting. You\u2019re constantly on an adventure, waiting to see what\u2019s around the next corner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe organisers have got it right with the diversity of riding. It\u2019s just such a great event and one I\u2019d definitely encourage people to come and race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Veteran cyclist Mclean congratulated the winners and said he and Diesel had raced hard to claim the runner-up spot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time you line up for a race you dream of coming first, but Adriaan and Andrew are just in another league.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-41808-0-01981100-1401698002.jpg\" data-fileid=\"365209\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"365209\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-41808-0-01981100-1401698002.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-41808-0-01981100-1401698002.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">ort Elizabeth\u2019s Andrea von Holdt (left) and SanMari Woithe, of the Merrell Ladies team, were all smiles after winning the women\u2019s race at the PwC Great Zuurberg Trek \/\/ Image credit: Full Stop Communications<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After battling with punctures and accidents over the first two days, Mclean said he was delighted with the final result.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything came together and we\u2019re very happy. Today there was so much single-track I was hoping it would end \u2013 that\u2019s how good it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s race, the Port Elizabeth-based Merrell Ladies team of Andrea von Holdt and SanMari Woithe took the final stage in 3:42:48 for an uncontested overall victory in 12:50:44.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very happy, we really rode our hearts out today,\u201d said Von Holdt.<\/p>\n<p>The Scott 2 pairing of Siska van der Bijl and Lester Tait triumphed in the mixed category in 12:58:46, completing a trio of stage wins in 3:49:22.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a good day,\u201d said Tait. \u201cNo flats, no mechanicals, just good hard riding.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"bg-slate-100 p-5\">\nVisit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greatzuurbergtrek.co.za\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">www.greatzuurbergtrek.co.za<\/a> or follow the race on @zuurbergtrekker and Facebook.\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Andrew Hill and Adriaan Louw were in confident form ahead of next week\u2019s national marathon championships as they cruised to victory in the three-day PwC Great Zuurberg Trek in the Addo area near Port Elizabeth on Sunday.
