With him are Westvaal-BMC\u2019s runner-up Tyler Day (right) and third-placed Herman Fouch\u00e9 of Bonitas. \/\/ Photo: Jetline Action Photo. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Bonitas rider put the hammer down with 3km left to lay the foundation for his victory in the 115km feature event in 2:37:38.<\/p>\n<p>Julius, who was making his race debut, outsprinted fastmen Tyler Day of Westvaal-BMC and teammate Herman Fouch\u00e9, who had to settle for second and third respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The 20-year-old, who recently returned from racing in wind-swept Belgium, said the breezy conditions in the first of the spring classics had suited him ideally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had the wind blowing in the right direction going into the finish. Also, the last uphill drag was perfect for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julius said he knew that that would be his last chance to attack, as the fast and flattish course traditionally came down to a decisive bunch sprint.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just needed that last hill to make the difference and once I got the gap, it was perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although he knew he had a good turn of speed from his early track racing days, Julius said he had surprised the opposition and even his own teammates by crossing the line first.<\/p>\n<div style=\"\">\n<a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-45860100-1408293793.jpg\" data-fileid=\"400673\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"400673\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-45860100-1408293793.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-45860100-1408293793.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Chan\u00e9 Jonker of Bestmed-ASG won the women\u2019s section of the 115km Lost City Cycle Classic. \/\/ Photo: Jetline Action Photo<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI even shocked myself! I never thought I could finish a race like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a GC rider, the Ruimsig resident said his original assignment for the day had simply been to attack and follow the moves.<\/p>\n<p>The major break of the day came when Day, Chris Jooste and Willie Smit went clear after 15km. They worked well together and were in the lead for 80km.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout my team, I don\u2019t think I could have pulled off this win today because so many moves followed,\u201d said Julius.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn racing, as in life, you can\u2019t do it alone \u2013 you need your people around you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The win kicks off the second half of what has been a successful first season with Bonitas for the young pro.<\/p>\n<p>Julius started the year with a podium at The Herald VW Cycle Tour in Port Elizabeth and took the runner-up spot behind Dylan Girdlestone at the Grand Premi Odena in Spain in April.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, he stormed to third overall in the Lowveld Tour and also claimed the king of the mountains jersey.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s race was won by Bestmed-ASG\u2019s Chan\u00e9 Jonker in 3:15:14.<\/p>\n<p>She finished a minute clear of Activate Drinks\u2019 Mandy Human and third-placed An-Li Kachelhoffer.<\/p>\n<p>In the 50km mountain bike feature race on Sunday, Ian Pienaar claimed the laurels, while Anneke Hanekom triumphed in the women\u2019s race.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cansalostcity.co.za\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">www.cansalostcity.co.za<\/a>.
