{"id":20982,"date":"2014-08-22T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-08-22T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2014\/08\/22\/van-der-spuy-mum-about-scottburgh-2014-chances-r1557\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T11:57:56","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T11:57:56","slug":"van-der-spuy-mum-about-scottburgh-2014-chances-r1557","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/van-der-spuy-mum-about-scottburgh-2014-chances-r1557\/","title":{"rendered":"Van der Spuy mum about Scottburgh 2014 chances"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Men\u2019s defending champion Evan van der Spuy will have to be on top of his game if he is to become the first ever rider to successfully defend his Scottburgh MTB Race presented by Sappi title when this year\u2019s South coast clash takes place on Sunday 31 August.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-20967900-1408690052.jpg\" data-fileid=\"403357\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"403357\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-20967900-1408690052.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-20967900-1408690052.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Defending Scottburgh MTB Race presented by Sappi champion Evan van der Spuy is going into the 2014 edition with subdued expectations considering his year has been concentrated on his studies but the 20-year-old will be riding hard when the race begins on 31 August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Having previously been staged in June and coinciding with the winter solstice, van der Spuy is all too aware that conditions could be significantly different in 2014 with the race taking place some ten weeks later.<\/p>\n<p>The young talent is however confident that he can adapt to the different conditions when the race gets underway on the last official day of winter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are heading into spring so things could be very different this time around,\u201d the Varsity College rider said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a chance that it could be a little bit wetter and windier this time around which will make the race pretty interesting I\u2019m sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Margate resident has had a busy 2014 off the bike with his studies taking up the majority of his time, giving him precious little time to train and he explains how this has influenced the way he is looking to approach this year\u2019s Scottburgh clash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been working really hard this year at university so I am not putting any pressure on myself for the race \u2013 if I can just get a top five I will be happy!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018favourite\u2019 tag is not something that I have thought about at all and I won\u2019t be too worried about that when I start the race. I am going out there to ride hard and if I do well then that will be a bonus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith my studies I haven\u2019t been able to ride around here (the South Coast) as much as I would have liked even though there are some really awesome trails down here. I know the region well though so I am not too concerned about that side of my preparation too much,\u201d a relaxed van der Spuy added.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-45284200-1408690047.jpg\" data-fileid=\"403356\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"403356\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-45284200-1408690047.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-45284200-1408690047.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Having claimed the Scottburgh MTB Race presented by Sappi in 2013 Evan van der Spuy (Varsity College) has not put too much pressure on himself to defend his title when the race gets underway on 31 August in the South Coast town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are minimal changes to the course for the 2014 edition of the Scottburgh MTB Race and having held off the challenge of Lee Penderis last year, van der Spuy feels that the course does play into his hands well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a climb at the beginning of the race that is tough but it suits the cross country riders and that is where my background is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough the climb will be beneficial for me, I am really looking forward to the descent after it!\u201d van der Spuy chuckled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a climb towards the end where I managed to hold of Lee (Penderis) last year and I\u2019m sure that will be a factor again this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe course is quite technical and I think with my cross country background, this will suit me. It is going to be very similar this year to last with some good single track so I\u2019m sure it will be a lot of fun!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Van der Spuy is unsure of who else will join him on this year\u2019s start line and is recognises his nearest threat may well come from out-of-town. The 20 year-old is however familiar with his nearest local rivals and despite talking down his chances, still sees the event as one where there is plenty of coastal pride on the line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the locals the race is definitely for bragging rights!\u201d he said light-heartedly. \u201cThere are always different threats and always guys who can come and win the race from around here but we all know each other well in these parts so the biggest threat will be someone coming from Maritzburg or Durban.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Entries for the 2014 Scottburgh MTB Race presented by Sappi are open and can be submitted via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roag.co.za\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">www.roag.co.za<\/a> for the 10km Fun Ride, 28km Intermediate event as well as the 45km Classic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Men\u2019s defending champion Evan van der Spuy will have to be on top of his game if he is to become the first ever rider to successfully defend his Scottburgh MTB Race presented by Sappi title when this year\u2019s South coast clash takes place on Sunday 31 August.
