{"id":20839,"date":"2014-10-10T09:30:00","date_gmt":"2014-10-10T08:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2014\/10\/10\/record-turn-out-for-spur-school-mtb-league-finals-r1703\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T11:51:21","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T11:51:21","slug":"record-turn-out-for-spur-school-mtb-league-finals-r1703","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/record-turn-out-for-spur-school-mtb-league-finals-r1703\/","title":{"rendered":"Record turn-out for Spur School MTB League finals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following an exciting 2014 season, fierce competition marked the national finals of the Spur High School Mountain Bike League that was hosted at Bekker School in Magaliesburg.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-82500300-1412933007.jpg\" data-fileid=\"427578\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"427578\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-82500300-1412933007.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-82500300-1412933007.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Montana cheering on Johann Trotzky who finished third in the Spur School Mountain Bike League National Finals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A record number of 355 riders representing the cream of high school mountain bike riders from more than 69 schools across South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe competed in the<\/p>\n<p>two-day event.<\/p>\n<p>The team from Menlopark High School was on top form and secured four podium positions as well as logging a number of top ten positions to secure both the girls and mixed team national championship trophies, while Grey College in Bloemfontein won the boys team category.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-67920600-1412933017.jpg\" data-fileid=\"427581\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"427581\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-67920600-1412933017.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-67920600-1412933017.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Youth Women Start<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The 4.5km track at Bekker School proved more challenging than previous seasons boasting a lot of single track stretches as well as tricky falls and climbs that required both stamina and technical skills of the riders. The lap-race format of the event saw the various age categories complete a specific number of laps ranging from two laps for the sub-junior girls to a testing five laps for the junior men.<\/p>\n<p>Points were awarded to the top 26 finishers in each race with the total school scores based on the top five boys in the Boys Team category, top three girls in the Girls Team category, and three boys and two girls respectively in the Mixed Team category. According to Gauteng league co-ordinator, Deon Steyn, it was the depth of the Menlopark team that secured them the top spot proving that all efforts count.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-15156900-1412933011.jpg\" data-fileid=\"427579\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"427579\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-15156900-1412933011.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-15156900-1412933011.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Youth Boys 15 finish. Pieter du Toit of Volkskool pipping Francois Annendale of Grey College to the finish to take the title. Earlier this year the league cemented its position as one of the leading sport development programmes in the country when it was shortlisted as a finalist for the 2014 Discovery Sport Industry Awards.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-55418500-1412933014.jpg\" data-fileid=\"427580\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"427580\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-55418500-1412933014.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-55418500-1412933014.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">outh Men 16 years interprovincial start line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Spur School Mountain Bike League final is also considered an interprovincial derby with the top riders from each province selected to compete for their respective provinces. Competition was fierce between Gauteng and North West Provinces with each logging a number of wins, but it was defending champion Gauteng that once again took home the coveted Spur Mountain Bike League Interprovincial Trophy.
