{"id":20648,"date":"2015-01-13T07:50:00","date_gmt":"2015-01-13T07:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2015\/01\/13\/township-cycling-gets-competitive-with-backing-from-rand-water-r1903\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T11:23:25","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T11:23:25","slug":"township-cycling-gets-competitive-with-backing-from-rand-water-r1903","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/township-cycling-gets-competitive-with-backing-from-rand-water-r1903\/","title":{"rendered":"Township cycling gets competitive with backing from Rand Water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Competitive cyclists from South Africa\u2019s two biggest townships have been given the opportunity to showcase their talent and potential on the national cycling stage thanks to the support of Rand Water, the new headline and title sponsor of the Velokhaya National Competitive Programme<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-17798200-1421136068.jpg\" data-fileid=\"469742\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"469742\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-2-0-17798200-1421136068.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-2-0-17798200-1421136068.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A long-time supporter of cycling, Rand Water\u2019s partnership with the Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy will provide deserving cyclists from Soweto and Khayelitsha with a much-needed platform to develop their cycling talent, compete against the best cyclists in the country and improve their lives through the sport of cycling.<\/p>\n<p>According to Velokhaya General Manager, Sipho Mona, \u201cVelokhaya has already produced a number of top road cyclists, including Team Bonitas Captain, Luthando Kaka and Team MTN Qhubeka\u2019s Songezo Jim and Nicholas Dlamini.<\/p>\n<p>These riders have not only made their mark on both the local and international cycling stage, but have inspired many township youth to participate and excel in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to the Rand Water sponsorship, the Velokhaya Competitive Team will now be able to build on its successes of 2014, which included gaining a number of podium places in provincial events, a win in the Western Province Time Trial Championships as well as competing in the Mzansi Tour, South Africa\u2019s only international road race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mona said Velokhaya was \u201cdelighted that Rand Water has recognised the many years of work and commitment put in by both the Velokhaya team and its management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an honour to welcome Rand Water as one of Velokhaya\u2019s main partners for 2015,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Velokhaya Rand Water Competitive Team will also be supported by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cadencenutrition\" rel=\"external nofollow\">Cadence Nutrition<\/a>, the team\u2019s official supplements partner, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onesight.org\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">One Sight Foundation<\/a>, its eyewear partner and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.squirtlube.com\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Squirt Lube<\/a>, which has committed to providing lubricants to keep the team\u2019s wheel\u2019s turning throughout 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The Velokhaya Rand Water team members include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elite\/u23 Men<\/strong><br \/>1.
