Leading the pack by 1 minute 40 seconds in the Male Open Category is South African 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic hopeful, James Reid, and in the Open Female Category Hungary\u2019s Eszter Doza has a 2 minute lead over her nearest rival, last year\u2019s winner Hannele Steyn (RSA).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"w-full aspect-video\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"113\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fqyl0-PYnAA?feature=oembed\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Having recently joined Team RECM and making his Trans Hajar debut, James Reid is already enjoying this new challenge,<\/p>\n<div class=\"pullquote\">\n<p>&#8220;We have similar terrain to Oman in South Africa, but this is quite different in many ways as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe race has already been a lot of fun \u2013 you\u2019re always exploring and finding new routes. You can see the organisers have really thought about it and I\u2019ve heard they have a whole line up for the rest of the week. Today was hard and a nice way to open the racing. It\u2019s always hard when there\u2019s a tar road climb especially when there are two laps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to the rest of the week \u2013 I think it is going to be an exciting couple of days and a completely new experience for someone from Africa\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-33789500-1422649953.jpg\" data-fileid=\"478404\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"478404\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-33789500-1422649953.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-33789500-1422649953.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With fresh legs, competitors pushed themselves to the limit completing two laps of a rocky 21km loop around the \u2018Sint Bowl\u2019, a 1,000m high plateau between Jebel Kwar and Jebel Shams, before descending a fast single-track section and climbing back to the camp to finish.
