{"id":20420,"date":"2015-03-03T09:15:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-03T09:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2015\/03\/03\/sahmurai-looking-sharp-ahead-of-absa-cape-epic-r2134\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T11:14:02","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T11:14:02","slug":"sahmurai-looking-sharp-ahead-of-absa-cape-epic-r2134","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/sahmurai-looking-sharp-ahead-of-absa-cape-epic-r2134\/","title":{"rendered":"Sahmurai looking sharp ahead of Absa Cape Epic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From 2007 to 2010 Germans Stefan Sahm and Karl Platt were the dominant team in the Absa Cape Epic: they won it three times and finished second in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>But in mid-2011, after the Team Bulls pair had finished third in that year\u2019s event, \u201cSahmurai\u201d was diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis and his form dipped. In 2012 they finished sixth overall and in 2013 the Team Bulls management paired Platt with Swiss strongman Urs Huber.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-63819000-1425374204.jpg\" data-fileid=\"493919\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"493919\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-63819000-1425374204.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-63819000-1425374204.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Whatever disappointment he might have felt at the time, Sahm appears to have put it behind him now and has entered the 2015 Absa Cape Epic with South African Timo Cooper.<\/p>\n<p>He has been in strong form recently, winning the solo and overall categories at the Tankwa Trek and the Garden Route 300. He has also settled in Stellenbosch from his native Germany, and seems to be in a good place generally.<\/p>\n<p>So is he over the thrombosis at last? \u201cI think so,\u201d he said this week. \u201cThe clot will be there forever, but it\u2019s not bothering me \u2026 I\u2019m used to it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He is pleased with his form, which has been \u201cvery good\u201d, but candidly accepts that his best years were from 2007 to 2010 and does not seem to have particular ambitions for the 2015 Absa Cape Epic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll see how it goes. You know how the Epic is \u2026 it\u2019s crazy: one day you are a superhero and the next you are fixing punctures all day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He has never raced as a teammate with Cooper, but \u201cwe\u2019ve done lots of training together and I think we\u2019ll make a good team\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-87612300-1425374207.jpg\" data-fileid=\"493920\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"493920\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-87612300-1425374207.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-87612300-1425374207.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He and Cooper stuck together for parts of the Garden Route 300 and it obviously went well \u2013 winner Sahm was joined on the podium by second-placed Cooper.<\/p>\n<p>Sahm is still a member of Team Bulls but its management has given him the go-ahead to join Cooper under the JAG Foundation banner in the 2015 Absa Cape Epic.<\/p>\n<p>Part of 38-year-old Sahm\u2019s recent revival may be his successful move from Germany to Stellenbosch, where things are \u201cgoing very, very well\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of the \u201cSahmurai\u201d nickname, the German appears to be of a fairly laid-back demeanour, and his sportsmanship over the years has won him many fans.
