{"id":20401,"date":"2015-03-06T14:50:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-06T14:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2015\/03\/06\/koning-takes-tour-de-boland-crown-r2152\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T11:13:37","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T11:13:37","slug":"koning-takes-tour-de-boland-crown-r2152","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/koning-takes-tour-de-boland-crown-r2152\/","title":{"rendered":"Koning takes Tour de Boland crown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Team Drapac\u2019s flying Dutchman Peter Koning stayed at the forefront of the charge up to the Taal Monument to win the overall crown at the Bestmed Tour de Boland, presented by Pinarello, above Paarl in South Africa on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-06807400-1425653238.jpg\" data-fileid=\"495959\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"495959\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-06807400-1425653238.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-06807400-1425653238.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Drapac\u2019s yellew jersey winner Peter Koning (left) being congratulated by South African Darren Lill after crossing the finish line of the fifth and final stage at the Taal Monument above Paarl on Friday. \/\/ Photo: Full Stop Communications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Koning, who secured the yellow jersey on the preceding queen stage, went into the 86km fifth and final leg from Riebeek-Kasteel with a 55-second lead over Bonitas all-rounder JC Nel, with his teammate Dylan Girdlestone a further five seconds in arrears.<\/p>\n<p>On the three-lap circuit of Paarl Mountain Reserve, the three contenders remained in the final selection on the gravel road climb to retain their positions in the general classification.<\/p>\n<p>Koning finished fifth on the day to claim overall victory in the shadow of the iconic landmark with an aggregate time of 12:34:07.<\/p>\n<div style=\"\">\n<a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-74380300-1425653231.jpg\" data-fileid=\"495957\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"495957\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-74380300-1425653231.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-74380300-1425653231.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">HB Kruger of Abantu wins the fifth and final stage of the Bestmed Tour de Boland at the Taal Monument above Paarl on Friday. \/\/ Photo: Full Stop Communications.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Nel and Girdlestone, who were both locked on 12:35:00, took second and third respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Koning said two riders on the final podium was a great result for the team from Down Under.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe guys did a really good job today, pulling all day in the front, keeping it together and depending on me to do the last laps,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the gravel I tried to ride at my own pace and when the others kept attacking I just kept countering and tried to relax.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no time for panic. It was not too hard for me, so it was really good and quite fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HB Kruger went hard on the final ascent to take Team Abantu\u2019s second stage win in 2:29:09, followed by Girdlestone (2:29:12) and Nel (2:29:17).<\/p>\n<p>Boland-born Nolan Hoffman won the day\u2019s two sprint primes in Riebeek-Kasteel and Paarl to secure a dominant victory in the Compendium Insurance points classification.<\/p>\n<p>Europcar SA\u2019s Bradley Potgieter, who launched early solo attacks on a couple of stages, took the runner-up spot, with Swiss rider Konny Looser of Aramex third.<\/p>\n<p>Westvaal climber Paul van Zweel claimed the hotspots on Bothmaskloof Pass and Jan Phillips Drive to wrest the Aramex king of the mountains jersey from Tesfom Okubamariam of the MTN-Qhubeka feeder team.<\/p>\n<p>Former roadie turned mountain biker Waylon Woolcock rounded out the climbers\u2019 podium after claiming valuable points during a brief attack on the first ascent up to the monument.<\/p>\n<p>The MTN-Qhubeka riders did enough throughout to secure the team classification ahead of Drapac and Giant.<\/p>\n<div style=\"\">\n<a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-93518000-1425653234.jpg\" data-fileid=\"495958\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"495958\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-93518000-1425653234.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-93518000-1425653234.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">RECM\u2019s Ariane Kleinhans successfully defended her title at the Bestmed Tour de Boland at the Taal Monument above Paarl on Friday. \/\/ Photo: Full Stop Communications.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the women\u2019s tour, RECM\u2019s Swiss mountain biker Ariane Kleinhans successfully defended her title in a combined time of 14:05:08.
