{"id":20373,"date":"2015-03-11T11:45:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-11T11:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2015\/03\/11\/iron-sally-gets-a-new-cape-epic-partner-r2182\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T11:12:01","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T11:12:01","slug":"iron-sally-gets-a-new-cape-epic-partner-r2182","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/iron-sally-gets-a-new-cape-epic-partner-r2182\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cIron Sally\u201d gets a new Cape Epic partner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Top British rider Sally Bigham has had to find a new partner only days before the start of the 2015 Absa Cape Epic after her teammate Bla\u017ea Klemen\u010di\u010d of Slovenia pulled out with an injury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIron Sally\u201d will now be riding with Austrian Christina Kollmann, a 27-year-old with a record of good results in marathons over the past two years.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-22630400-1426074167.jpg\" data-fileid=\"498552\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"498552\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-22630400-1426074167.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-22630400-1426074167.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Sally Bigham.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bigham has twice won the Women\u2019s category and had been hoping for a third with Klemen\u010di\u010d, but the Slovenian picked up a knee injury in training.<\/p>\n<p>Kollmann should, however, prove to be an adept partner. She got several good results in 2015, including two third-place finishes in UCI marathon series races and wins in some regional events.<\/p>\n<div style=\"\">\n<a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-93761800-1426074165.jpg\" data-fileid=\"498551\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"498551\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-93761800-1426074165.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-93761800-1426074165.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Christina Kollmann.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis will be my first race together with Christina, though we raced against each other a number of times last year in one-day events,\u201d said Bigham. \u201cIt\u2019s a little bit tough for Christina because she hadn\u2019t planned or prepared for the Cape Epic, but we are excited about racing together and we will give it our all. We are both 50kg to 52kg and we climb well, so we are looking forward to the stages with lots of climbing!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kollmann has the benefit of having done the Absa Cape Epic once before \u2013 in 2014 when she finished fifth in the Mixed category with South African Nizaam Essa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristina is coming from winter in Austria but she\u2019s had some training camps in Mallorca and Lake Garda. As I said, it\u2019s hard for her because this was very short notice \u2013 she only had seven days to prepare when I asked her,\u201d commented Bigham. \u201cShe\u2019s raced the Cape Epic before and she knows what she has ahead of her, she&#8217;s had good training over the winter and we\u2019re looking forward to getting into a rhythm over the longer stages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Does this mean Bigham has scaled back her ambitions? \u201cWe are entering the unknown to be honest, but we\u2019re open minded! Christina and I will give our best and see what we can do, but I expect that we will become stronger as the race goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Women\u2019s category has attracted its strongest field yet for the 2015 Absa Cape Epic. Defending champions Ariane Kleinhans of Switzerland and Annika Langvad of Denmark are back, but will have their work cut out.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-65773500-1426074169.jpg\" data-fileid=\"498553\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"498553\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-65773500-1426074169.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-65773500-1426074169.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Besides Bigham and Kollmann, they will have to see off the challenge of former women\u2019s winner Esther Suss, also Swiss, and Belgian Alice Pirard.
