{"id":20339,"date":"2015-03-16T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-16T15:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2015\/03\/16\/day-of-drama-at-absa-cape-epic-r2215\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T11:11:05","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T11:11:05","slug":"day-of-drama-at-absa-cape-epic-r2215","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/day-of-drama-at-absa-cape-epic-r2215\/","title":{"rendered":"Day of drama at Absa Cape Epic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a day of drama, Christoph Sauser laid down a significant marker in his bid to become the first person to win the Absa Cape Epic five times.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-01752100-1426519344.jpeg\" data-fileid=\"501084\" data-fileext=\"jpeg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"501084\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-01752100-1426519344.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-01752100-1426519344.jpeg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Christoph Sauser and Jaroslav Kulhavy of Investec-Songo-Specialized celebrate winning stage 1 of the 2015 Absa Cape Epic Mountain Bike stage race held from Oak Valley Wine Estate in Elgin. \/\/ Photo by Shaun Roy\/Cape Epic\/SPORTZPICS<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Swiss master and his Czech teammate Jaroslav Kulhavy (Investec-Songo-Specialized) showed great form on the 113km Stage 1 as they overcame a puncture to finish the day almost a minute ahead of Sauser\u2019s great rival, Karl Platt of Germany, who is riding with Swiss strongman Urs Huber.<\/p>\n<p>One of the top professionals in the field, Kargo Pro MTB&#8217;s Emil Lindgren, was out of the race after crashing on a descent off the flank of the Groenlandberg and breaking his arm. He was riding with South African Brendon Davids, who will have to soldier on as an Outcast \u2013 professional riders who can continue to take part but not compete and may not influence the outcome of the race.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-78165800-1426519354.jpeg\" data-fileid=\"501086\" data-fileext=\"jpeg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"501086\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-78165800-1426519354.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-78165800-1426519354.jpeg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Emil Lindgren breaks his arm in a crash down Groenlandberg during stage 1 of the 2015 Absa Cape Epic. \/\/ Photo by Nick Muzik\/Cape Epic\/SPORTZPICS<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bad luck struck another of the pre-race favourite teams, Topeak Ergon\u2019s defending champion Kristian Hynek of the Czech Republic and Austrian Alban Lakata, when they had to repair two punctures and swop a wheel at a tech zone.<\/p>\n<p>They managed, however, to recover and finish fourth, some four minutes behind Sauser and Kulhavy.<\/p>\n<p>The day was a tough one for riders throughout the field, with some 2 800m of vertical gain through the Stage and then a steady drizzle which made surfaces slippery and occasionally treacherous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s cool being in yellow zebra jersey after the first stage,\u201d said Sauser. \u201cIt was my first real test of the season and everything went well. My legs were good today and we were able to put the Bulls under pressure at times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sauser and Kulhavy had built up a lead in the early stages of the race but picked up a sidewall puncture and lost time as they repaired it. The Bulls pair swept past and their lead grew to more than two minutes as Sauser stopped to change the entire wheel at one of the official tech zones.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-30112500-1426519348.jpeg\" data-fileid=\"501085\" data-fileext=\"jpeg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"501085\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-30112500-1426519348.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-30112500-1426519348.jpeg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Christoph Sauser fixes a puncture as Team Bulls makes up time.\/\/ Photo by Nick Muzik\/Cape Epic\/SPORTZPICS<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt under pressure today because I didn\u2019t have a good prologue,\u201d added Sauser. \u201cI felt super comfortable going over Groenlandberg (the major climb of the day). I was in control.\u201d He added, however, that \u201cyou can\u2019t control the downhill\u201d and that is where he picked up the puncture.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Swiss\/Czech pairing was strong enough to catch Platt and Huber and build another lead before the finish: \u201cFortunately we caught them, recovered and attacked,\u201d said Sauser, who had notched up his 32nd Absa Cape Epic stage win. \u201cI\u2019m glad to be riding with Jaro again (they won the 2013 Absa Cape Epic together) \u2026 he\u2019s a powerhouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kulhavy said Sauser had recovered strongly from his prologue difficulties. \u201cWe must do it for \u2018Susi\u2019 because this race means so much to him,\u201d said Kulhavy.<\/p>\n<p>Platt said that he was pleased to be on the podium. \u201cEveryone was fresh and motivated and the pace on the first climb (up Groenlandberg after 20km) was really high. I was racing on the limit today \u2026 it\u2019s going to be a really fast Epic\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It was good day for Spaniard Jose Hermida, one of the characters of the professional circuit, and his Dutch partner Rudi van Houts (Multivan Merida), who finished third after a steady ride.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-44344300-1426519392.jpeg\" data-fileid=\"501088\" data-fileext=\"jpeg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"501088\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-44344300-1426519392.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-44344300-1426519392.jpeg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Riders during stage 1 of the 2015 Absa Cape Epic. \/\/ Photo by Sam Clark\/Cape Epic\/SPORTZPICS<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good feeling being on the podium after last year\u2019s bad luck (when he fell ill),\u201d said Hermida. \u201cWe have the legs to fight for the overall, but anything can happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Overnight yellow zebra jersey leaders Fabian Giger and Martin Gujan, both of Switzerland, dropped back to fifth place. Giger confessed afterwards that his decision to ride a \u201chardtail\u201d \u2013 with no suspension on the back wheel \u2013 had meant for a \u201cvery rough\u201d ride on the descents off the Groenlandberg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTowards the end the course wasn\u2019t so bumpy, so it got better,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The first South African pair home were USN\u2019s Rourke Croeser and Travis Walker, who were behind the RED-E Blend team of Darren Lill and Waylon Woolcock for much of the day but managed to catch them in the last 25km and come home seventh.<\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s stage took orders in a loop which started and ended at Oak Valley Wine Estate in the Elgin Valley. Tuesday\u2019s Stage 2 follows a similar format \u2013 starting and finishing at Oak Valley \u2013 but traverses different parts of the valley, and includes many sections of singletrack.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"text-2xl font-bold\">Stage 1 Results:<\/h2>\n<p>1.
