{"id":20333,"date":"2015-03-17T16:55:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-17T16:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2015\/03\/17\/red-hot-racing-for-absa-african-special-jersey-r2226\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T11:10:52","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T11:10:52","slug":"red-hot-racing-for-absa-african-special-jersey-r2226","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/red-hot-racing-for-absa-african-special-jersey-r2226\/","title":{"rendered":"Red hot racing for Absa African special jersey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Little more than two minutes separate the top three South African teams after Tuesday\u2019s windswept Stage 2 of the Absa Cape Epic.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-75000700-1426614425.jpg\" data-fileid=\"501827\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"501827\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-75000700-1426614425.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-75000700-1426614425.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Waylon Woolcock and Darren Lill of RED-E Blend. \/\/ Photo by Nick Muzik\/Cape Epic\/SPORTZPICS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>RED-E Blend\u2019s Darren Lill and Waylon Woolcock, managed to put a poor Stage 1 behind them and were first home among the teams racing for the red Absa African special jersey, worn by the top all-African team to finish the event.<\/p>\n<p>In doing so they closed the gap on Rourke Croeser and Travis Walker (USN), but the KwaZulu Natal youngsters will still be in red on Wednesday\u2019s Stage 3.<\/p>\n<p>Philip Buys and Matthys Beukes (Scott Factory Racing) are second in the race for the special jersey, only one minute and 32 seconds back.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-97713200-1426614332.jpg\" data-fileid=\"501826\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"501826\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-97713200-1426614332.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-97713200-1426614332.jpg\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Rourke Croeser [R] and Travis Walker [L] during stage 2. \/\/ Photo by Sam Clark\/Cape Epic\/SPORTZPICS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Absa African special jersey has become much sought after in recent years and Woolcock made it clear it was their objective for this year\u2019s Absa Cape Epic: \u201cAlong with Philip and Matthys we put some pressure on Travis and Rourke, and did some damage,\u201d he said. \u201cToday was very windy and it was not always so easy out there. We are happy to be upright still and are feeling confident for the days ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Dimension Data Masters category is also a tight affair, with South Africans Nico Pfitzenmaier and Robert Sim (Dorma\/Robert Daniel) beating Masters leaders Bart Brentjens of the Netherlands and Brazil\u2019s Abraao Azevedo (BETCH.nl-Superior) by five seconds on Tuesday. Today was my favourite kind of racing. I feel at home here because we come and ride so much on these trails. I really wanted the victory on \u2018home soil\u2019, so I am very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Swiss\/Austrian combination Barti Bucher and Heinz Zoerweg (Meerendal BIXS KTM) have taken a firm hold of the Grand Masters category and have a lead of almost 30 minutes over second-placed South Africans Greg Anderson and Andrew Mclean (Ascendis Health).<\/p>\n<p>There was drama in the Mixed category when overnight leaders Rene Haselbacher and Sabine Sommer, both of Austria and riding for team ENS RH77, got lost towards the end of the stage and finished fourth in the category on the day \u2013 more than 12 minutes back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took a wrong turn close to the finish at added some three kilometres to our stage,\u201d said Haselbacher, a former Tour de France rider.<\/p>\n<p>Slovenian Peter Vesel and his German partner Ivonne Kraft (ETIS) won the stage and took the overall lead, but only have a one-and-a-half minute cushion over Haselbacher and Sommer, which they may find difficult to defend over the remaining five stages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not happy to lose the overall lead, but we still have time to get back in front,\u201d said Haselbacher.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"text-2xl font-bold\">Masters category &#8211; Stage 2 results<\/h2>\n<p>17.
