{"id":20297,"date":"2015-03-22T11:50:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-22T11:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/2015\/03\/22\/susi-gets-win-number-five-r2259\/"},"modified":"2023-02-08T11:09:32","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T11:09:32","slug":"susi-gets-win-number-five-r2259","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikehub.co.za\/news\/susi-gets-win-number-five-r2259\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Susi\u2019 gets win number five"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Swiss mountain biking legend Christoph Sauser\u2019s last Absa Cape Epic as a professional rider ended in triumph on Sunday as he inked his name into history by becoming the first person to win it five times.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-03849900-1427024766.jpg\" data-fileid=\"504051\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"504051\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-03849900-1427024766.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-03849900-1427024766.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Christoph Sauser of Investec-Songo-Specialized and Jaroslav Kulhavy of Investec-Songo-Specialized celebrate winning the 2015 Absa Cape Epic during the final stage (stage 7) of the 2015 Absa Cape Epic.\/\/ Photo by Shaun Roy\/Cape Epic\/SPORTZPICS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The 39-year-old and Czech partner Jaroslav Kulhavy (Investec-Songo-Specialized) rode conservatively to finish fifth on a sun-drenched 92km final stage from Wellington to Meerendal Wine Estate, Durbanville.<\/p>\n<p>After eight days of thrilling racing and 748km they won the general classification by 10 minutes and 41 seconds from Topeak Ergon\u2019s Alban Lakata of Austria and Kristian Hynek of the Czech Republic.<\/p>\n<p>The prestigious Grand Finale stage was won by Meerendal Centurion Vaude\u2019s German\/Swiss combination of Jochen Kaess and Daniel Geismayr. The day was described by some veterans of the Absa Cape Epic as probably its toughest Stage 7 yet.<\/p>\n<p>Sauser\u2019s landmark win sparked a huge celebration on the finish line, with the riders and their support crew being drenched in champagne as thousands of mountain biking fans celebrated at Meerendal Wine Estate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the coolest thing in the world with all these spectators cheering us on \u2026 these moments are very rare,\u201d said an elated Sauser at the finish. \u201cWith five kilometres to go I knew that we had it. I tried to absorb as much of it as I could, and thought about all the memories this race has given me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said crossing the finish line had been \u201ca big relief \u2026 a big weight off my back\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The normally taciturn Kulhavy was also grinning broadly, saying \u201cit was really good racing with \u2018Susi\u2019 \u2026 I enjoyed every kilometre of the stage today and especially the finish line\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on his fifth win, Sauser said \u201cit is really cool, but one day someone will beat the record\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe when I\u2019m old and grumpy it will mean something, but I\u2019m just enjoying the moment now,\u201d added Sauser.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image\" href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-62805900-1427024769.jpg\" data-fileid=\"504052\" data-fileext=\"jpg\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-fileid=\"504052\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" alt=\"ccs-62657-0-62805900-1427024769.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.bikehub.co.za\/production\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ccs-62657-0-62805900-1427024769.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"italic text-sm text-slate-500 block mt-1 mb-4\">Jose Hermida and Rudi van Houts of Multivan Merida finish second on the final stage during the final stage (stage 7) of the 2015 Absa Cape Epic. \/\/ Photo by Shaun Roy\/Cape Epic\/SPORTZPICS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Earlier Kaess and Geismayr and Multivan Merida\u2019s Rudi van Houts (Netherlands) and Jose Hermida (Spain) had broken away on the massive Paardeberg climb, about 20km into the route.<\/p>\n<p>They were both chasing the stage win and Kulhavy and Sauser chose to ignore their challenge and rather keep an eye on the second placed team of Lakata and Hynek.<\/p>\n<p>Kaess and Geismayr managed to keep Hermida and Van Houts at bay as they climbed up there Dorstberg behind Meerendal and then down the estate\u2019s renowned singletrack to cross the line five seconds ahead. Novus OMX Pro\u2019s Swiss pair Martin Gujan and Fabian Giger were third on the day.<\/p>\n<p>Hynek said afterwards: \u201cI never thought I\u2019d be disappointed with second \u2026 not being able to defend the title (which he won last year with Robert Mennen) was a great blow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lakata said it had been a \u201croller coaster\u201d race for him. \u201cWinning the Epic is a major goal for my career \u2026 I\u2019m getting closer. I\u2019ve come fifth, fourth, third and second \u2013 maybe next year will be my turn\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most disappointed rider on the finish line was Team Bulls\u2019s Karl Platt of Germany, also bidding for a fifth win, but he and partner Urs Huber struggled throughout.
