Advendurance selected the Legends Golf and Safari resort as the venue for this event because it is not only malaria free but less than three hours drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria. The venue itself boasts a world-class golf course and the Entabeni Private Nature Reserve, which is situated on 30 000 hectares of Waterberg and home to an array of game, including the Big Five.

Unlike most stage races, where tenting is the norm, the Tour of Legends includes premier accommodation and meals as part of the entry fee. In the past, the event’s planned routes have had to be diverted or riders asked to pause by game rangers to avoid potentially dangerous encounters with big game.

“The only thing that’s certain at the Tour of Legends is that you’ll have a comfortable sleep in a luxury hotel room as well as the finest cuisine. The riding is truly a wild African bush experience where safety of riders is the highest priority, but which means the possibility of sacrificing a high average speed to detour around a pride of lion or a herd of elephant,” explained Fritz Pienaar, Event Director at Advendurance.

“With Tour of Legends, we didn’t want to have another three-day stage race, we wanted to make it exciting, truly African and memorable, which is why this venue is so ideal. We’re expecting big interest in the Tour of Legends this year, especially among couples who are looking for a mountain biking escape with a dash of unpredictability thrown in,” smiled Pienaar.

Each of the three stages ranges between 50-60km, not that long, but not that easy either.
